From rural workshops to high-end commercial spaces, the company has earned a reputation for taking on challenging builds and delivering them on time and on budget. Darryn and Jill Astill, who purchased the business almost five years ago, bring extensive industry experience to every project. “I was building KiwiSpan structures as a contractor before the opportunity came to buy the business,” Darryn says. “I really like the quality of the product and the possibilities it offers. We take on an array of different types of buildings, and each one presents a unique challenge.” A standout project is the recently completed Te Rere o Ōmanawa/Ōmanawa Falls Visitors Centre and Rangers Office. Nestled in the native forest surrounding the 35-metre-high falls, the build reflects KiwiSpan’s focus on design, function, and cultural sensitivity. “Working to the budget and time frame was a key challenge, as it was a council project, but we achieved everything they asked for,” Darryn says. “We also completed the full fit-out, including a kitchenette, front-of-house facilities, and a large display area.” The project required careful collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including a Māori trust and two local councils – Bay of Plenty District and Tauranga City. “It was a commercial building in a rural space, and we had certain requirements from both councils. It was a learning experience, but we got there in the end,” Darryn says. Visitors to Ōmanawa Falls can now enjoy the newly upgraded viewing platforms and immersive forest walk, complemented by KiwiSpan Tauranga’s modern visitor centre and rangers’ office. The project reflects the company’s ability to blend design, functionality, and cultural awareness in a way that enhances the local environment. Darryn and Jill emphasise KiwiSpan Tauranga’s versatility. “We can handle any project we feel we can pull off. We love unique builds – turning a shed into something special that fits in with the house and its surroundings without costing a fortune is where we excel.” With the downturn affecting large commercial builds, KiwiSpan Tauranga’s steel structures are increasingly offering unique and practical advantages for living solutions. “We can achieve large, unsupported clear spans for living areas, which makes a huge difference in design and pricing,” Darryn explains. Despite recent economic challenges, KiwiSpan has continued to grow, including expanding further into the South Island. “The downturn in the last two years meant larger projects were fewer, but we’ve been busy creating habitable spaces, which is keeping us active,” Darryn says. The company handles every stage of the build, from initial design to final construction, including managing permits and compliance. Its 3D shed builder allows clients to customise every detail of their project, whether it’s a rural workshop, garage, or commercial space. All structures meet New Zealand standards and come with a 50-year structural durability statement. Darryn and Jill, along with their dedicated team, continue to provide expert service across Tauranga, from Waihi to Pukehina. With KiwiSpan Tauranga, clients can expect quality, New Zealand-made steel buildings tailored to their needs, delivered with professionalism and care.
