The Te Ara Pekapeka Bridge project resulted in a striking new landmark structure for the city, along with a pedestrian/cycling bridge — Taurapa Bridge — on the river’s north bank. The structural form of the Te Ara Pekapeka Bridge includes a large steel lattice central pier and is a unique solution that’s a first in New Zealand. In 2025, BBO was honoured with several national and international awards for their outstanding work on this project: the Rodney Davies Awards (2025) – NZ Planning Institute; the Eugene C. Figg Jr. Medal – International Bridge Conference Award; and a special mention at the 2025 Architizer A+ Awards, placing them in the top 5% of global entries for these awards that recognise excellence in architecture and design.
