CIVIL CONSTRUCTION Hutch Civil T T Hugh de Lacy You can’t get much more of a family focus in a drainage and excavation business than Kerikeri’s Hutch Civil, with two fathers and their two sons among Corey Hutchinson’s six staff, and Corey’s wife, Kirsty, handling the books. “We’ve got a really strong family and local focus in our business, operating throughout Northland from Whangarei to the Far North,” Corey says. “It makes for a very comfortable working relationship among the crew that expresses itself quite directly in client satisfaction. With such a tight-knit group as ours, clients can have the confidence that everything will be done right and that their interests are foremost.” Hutch Civil specialises in wastewater and stormwater management, extending to earthworks, driveway formation, commercial and school drainage, pump station maintenance, upgrades and installation, drain unblocking, flow meters, civil infrastructure, live connection works and confined space entry. Never one to let an opportunity pass, when he and the team showed up on one of their first jobs, at the settling ponds in Russell, the site was so overgrown they could barely get on to it, so Corey undertook to mow it, and other such council properties, and for the first year had a mowing team working alongside the civil team. Today, the company’s inventory extends to two trucks, a fleet of utes and a 2.5t Yanmar digger, with other machinery being hired in from strictly local sources as needed. Typical of the work Hutch Civil does was its contract for United Civil and the Far North District Council to deliver three kilometres of new watermains in Kaikohe. That followed work upgrading wastewater ponds, and a succession of other similar projects, for the local councils. Corey has a 400-metre watermain job in the pipeline, and other stormwater and wastewater projects coming up.. “The industry’s come through a a dry time lately when it seemed that everyone was holding on to their money, and a lot of projects were on hold, but things have brightened up and we’re starting to see those projects get under way at last,” Corey says. Corey got into the drainage business within a year of leaving school, completing his apprenticeship in West Auckland and starting his career working on civil projects. He has since worked for companies such as Downer, Ventia and Hydro Tech. “With 20 years of experience under my belt I decided I’d had enough of working for other people, so in 2022 went out on my own, getting finance to hire two staff and buy a sixtonne truck and the digger. “It was a bit of a lump at first, getting used to coming off a salaried job – I’d been working long hours in Whangarei for a couple of years, which gave me the nudge to set up a local business in Kerikeri and give it a go,” Corey says. “We survived, then thrived, and in three years we’ve grown to our present level, and the family and local focus is as strong as ever.” Rothbury Insurance Brokers are proud to support Hutch Civil We offer expert insurance advice and solutions to small, medium and large businesses and protect the assets of thousands of individuals.
