The company is owned by Dan and Fiona Woodcock, who purchased the business nearly four years ago when the original owner was looking to retire. With around 30 years’ experience in fabrication in Hamilton, Dan saw the opportunity as a natural next step. “We started talking, and it just made sense. It was the right time.” Since taking ownership, Dan has deliberately shifted the workshop’s direction toward light fabrication and sheet metal, aligning the business with his background and strengths. “We’ve refined what we do. It’s about sticking to what we’re good at and doing it properly.” Grainger Engineering now employs a close-knit team of six, including two qualified tradesmen, a second-year light fabrication apprentice, and currently a Wintec student completing work experience. “Training the next generation is important to me. I’ve always mentored apprentices throughout my career. If we don’t pass skills on, the industry doesn’t move forward.” Sheet metal fabrication is a key specialisation, with electrical cabinetry forming a significant part of the workload. Bringing a former colleague with sales experience into the business has further strengthened that diversification. “He brought a lot of clientele with him, which has been a bonus.” Long-standing industry relationships have continued to underpin the workflow. “I’ve been in the engineering game for 30 years, so I had a lot of people I’ve worked with over the years. Once they found out I had bought the business, they were more than happy to come and see me.” The workshop is equipped with a CNC brake press, guillotine, sheet metal rollers, and a full range of AC/DC TIG and MIG welders. A recently purchased lathe supports in-house machining for smaller components required within fabrication projects, allowing greater control over turnaround times and project efficiency. Work ranges from specialised one-off builds to repeat production runs. Among the many specialised light fabrication projects, Grainger Engineering has completed contracts for custom nitrogen carts for the New Zealand Defence Force, finished in standout yellow.
