Ian first trained as an engineer before founding Pinnacle Engineering. While the name dates back to an earlier business, the core of his marine timber work has continued to expand. That work includes the production and supply of timber whalers installed along the sides of concrete pontoons in marinas, forming a significant component of refurbishment and new-build projects. “It turns out to be quite a large business, and we now service most of the northern region and export to Australia as well,” Ian says. Pinnacle Engineering supports major players in the marina industry throughout the upper North Island and Australia. Demand from Australia has been particularly strong due to cost advantages in New Zealand pine. “Australia can get pine from Tasmania, but it’s cheaper to get it from New Zealand,” Ian says. “Last year I sent ten lots over at $50,000 each — that’s half a million dollars of work — and it all operates from a phone and a computer.” A key element of Pinnacle Engineering’s capability is a strategic supply relationship with Max Birt Sawmills. Max Birt supplies, drills, and treats the timber before it enters Pinnacle’s manufacturing and distribution pipeline. In November, Max Birt Sawmills was purchased by Kiwi Lumber Group, with Kiwi Lumber set to take full control in April. Recent marina projects include a large refurbishment at Westhaven which took several months to complete before Christmas. Ian attributes the Pinnacle Engineering’s versatility to decades of engineering experience and a focus on specialised equipment. He has developed custom cutting heads, purchased drilling machines, and built capability to produce custom drilling requirements with ease. “There’s room for development without hiring a lot of staff,” he says. “I can handle two or three times as much work just using the phone and the computer.” Pinnacle Engineering was born and bred in Pōkeno and Ian says his work contributes significantly to the local economy.
