Established in 1975 by Neville and Val Mace, Auckland company Mace Landscape Group is entering a new phase of development, with a change of management, a new site and an expansion of services. Neville and Val’s daughter, Michelle Mace, who joined the company full-time in 2007, and her fellow managing director, Brent Carly, have taken up the company’s day-to-day running. Brent has been with the company for 23 years since he began as a landscape foreman on the tools before progressing into the office as an estimator and moving into management. Together, he and Michelle are seeing Mace Landscapes through its next phase of growth and development, adding to Neville and Val’s 50-year legacy. Along with their managing director roles with Mace Landscapes, Michelle and Brent are also directors for Bark Wholesalers, a specialist horticultural soil and bark manufacturer, and Mace Trees, their wholesale nursery; sister companies that have been developed as operations have expanded and diversified over the years. Recently, the companies came together on one expansive 15-hectare site in Ardmore, a development that Michelle believes only adds to the group’s strength. “It’s a point of difference for our landscaping operations that we have the support of those other two companies and moving to this new site is definitely the start of a new chapter for each of them,” she says. With investment in the site focusing on the infrastructure and set up to support growth, they are now looking to expand the clientele across all sectors of the landscaping and horticulture industry. “We want to provide more for the industry as a whole with complete landscaping and maintenance services, plus a range of customblend products from Bark Wholesalers, which we know are in demand, and key plant lines in Mace Trees that meet the needs of the market in both quality and consistency,” says Brent. Bringing in bark stripped from forestry logging, Bark Wholesalers processes the raw material into different grades of bark and mulches, which are sold directly to landscapers, or in bulk to supply yards across Auckland. The finest bark particles blend with high-quality fertilisers and composites to produce a range of specialty soil mixes. These are then independently tested to ensure they will perform to a high standard for growers within the commercial horticulture market. “Producing everything ourselves means products are good value as well as high quality, and gives us the ability to tailor different blends to the specifications of the client,” says Brent. With new blocks being created for quality hedging grades of sought-after species, and dedicated space for contract growing large orders, the focus is on providing a good supply of well-furnished grades year-round. The facilities also support the developing environmental work undertaken within Mace Landscape Group. With full in-house services from design, to installation and maintenance, the company has noticed an increasing emphasis on ‘green’ initiatives within its core commercial work. This has evolved into an eco-sourcing programme involving the propagation of plants from locally sourced seed, explains Michelle. “Through previous projects we’ve been engaged to design and build, there’s a couple of key sites we’ve retained for ongoing maintenance, which are now good sources of
