68 | Bringing outdoor spaces to life A project usually begins with a set-price consultation from which basic concept drawings are provided. T T from page 67 Outer Spaces CONTRACTING At any one time it’s typical for Outer Spaces to be working across three projects, sometimes more, and those projects can be of all shapes and sizes, providing the team with plenty of variety and challenge to grow their own capabilities within the industry. A significant portion of their work is for absentee property owners, owning or building holiday homes, and who want to focus on enjoying outdoor living while using their properties. Adrian says that part of the journey has been to ‘train’ holiday home owners to not leave it too late to make contact and also to understand that weather patterns are changing somewhat through the seasons. “Summers can be just as wet as winters these days so it’s best to talk to us earlier about our process and project time-frames.” A project usually begins with a set-price consultation from which basic concept drawings are provided. The next task is to produce scale drawings which can then be used to quantify project implementation and establish a final budget. So far this year, Outer Spaces have confirmed work programmed up till the end of May, then the cycle tends to begin again as home owners contemplate changes to their landscapes in readiness for the next summer. Adrian says another backbone to the business is the very productive relationship they enjoy with a major roading contractor, undertaking improvements along SH2. • Diggers ranging from 2.7T to 23T • Bobcat • 2-20 Tonne Trucks • House Sites and Driveways • Demolitions • Section Clearing • General Contracting Work • Retaining Walls and Fencing • Decorative stone, Mulch and Bark • Topsoil, Lawn Mix and Garden Mix • Metal, Sand and Builders Mix Phone: 07 863 5340 www.beachcontractors.co.nz 691 Waihi Beach Road, Waihi Beach 2546 Waihi Whangamata Road, Whangamata Connecting you with nature...one Greenspace at a time. They’re not so impacted by negative economic factors.” A cohort of really supportive builders is another strong element to the business’s success to date. Adrian obtained his ‘assessors’ qualifications and, as such, can sign off work undertaken by apprentices in training. Training up the next generation is something that matters to him. “I’d encourage anyone with a practical bent, who enjoys the outdoors to consider gaining landscaping qualifications. It’s a trade that is varied in nature and apprentices become a ‘Jack or Jill of all trades’ through their learning. As such, it can then lead in all sorts of directions as a career.”
