Troake Wallboard Services “We’re people that don’t like to say no to things, so we’ve taken on some more trades that were quite new to our business and even new to the market.” JOINERY Founded by Vince and Victoria Troake in 1980 as Troake Wallboard Services the company’s early focus was on plasterboard installation (commonly known as GIB fixing). They saw an opportunity to improve their service to clients and provide a wider range of interior trades by expanding into plastering and painting and some metal ceiling batten work. Establishing a great reputation for high quality works and excellent service across these trades laid the foundation as the company grew into the second-generation, family-owned business it is today, operating as Troake and offering a broad range of primarily interior construction services. Vince remains the Company Director, Victoria is the General Manager of Strategy and Innovation, their son, Jacob, is General Manager of Operations, and Jacob’s wife, Grace, is Systems Manager. Their daughter, Emily, worked in several different roles over the years before becoming a doctor this year and her husband, Nick, is General Manager of Business. Jake started working in the family business straight out of school, doing his apprenticeships in suspended ceilings and steel framings, along with interior linings and plasterboard, before doing his supervisors’ course and working his way up to his current role. Nick has an engineering background and joined the company as Business Development Manager just as Covid hit before transitioning into his current role not long afterwards. The two men work closely together with Jacob looking after operations, Health &Safety and HR while Nick and his team handle business development, quantity surveying and finance. Backed by 40 years of experience in the industry and a well-earned reputation for the quality of their work, Jacob and Nick have overseen the addition of new regional hubs in the Bay of Plenty and Northland and tackled new market segments, explains Jacob. “Since we started, Nick and I have found there were opportunities and demands from clients to extend our services to widen the trades we offer. “We’re trusted by them and they wanted to put more under our umbrella in a project, giving us more to do, knowing they can trust us to deliver it to a standard they can rely on. “We’re people that don’t like to say no to things, so we’ve taken on some more trades that were quite new to our business and even new to the market.” It’s part and parcel of expanding their business from primarily stand-alone dwellings to include higher density residential buildings, including apartments, terrace housing, insurance, and other commercial fit out projects such as schools, hospitals, offices and shops. To enable this growth, the business has built its capability in complex steel wall framing and suspended ceilings to cater to increasingly stringent seismic standards. The business has also developed capability in Inter-Tenancy (IT) wall systems, insulation, aluminium and glazed partitions, fibrous plaster and a range of decorative wall and ceiling finishes which are all now parts of the business that continues to expand on its core skillset as wall and ceiling specialists. Projects such as the Tangihua Street Auckland CBD Office fit out with decorative and acoustic suspended ceilings hanging above curved walls and aluminium and glazed partitions, as well as a newly completed high-end home in Birkenhead which took out the AWCIs top Residential award in 2025, showcase both the breadth of Troake’s skillset and technical ability, and the high quality with which Troake executes such work. Last year, Victoria Troake received an AWCI Service to Industry Award, highlighting the company’s long-standing contribution to the wall and ceiling industry.
