Hamish, the youngest, completed his apprenticeship with Grant in 2012. Three years ago, he stepped up to Managing Director and his long-term fiancée, Heather, runs the accounts. There’s a total of seven family members working in the company which has a team of 30. “We have a strong family bond and most of the staff have been with us that long they’re like family too, making it a really close group,” says Hamish. “It’s because we’ve got this incredible team behind us that we can finish all of our projects to the highest standard for our clients. We’ve had the opportunity to complete some outstanding builds over the years in some great locations.” The Dobbyn family are high achievers and share a competitive streak that feeds into their work with results that have built them a strong reputation over the years, bringing new clients through word of mouth and others coming back time and again. We feel very fortunate to have built some longstanding relationships with some great clients and suppliers over the years,” says Hamish. With their combined skill set, the additional challenge of working in commercial appealed to the Dobbyns alongside their high-end residential portfolio which sets the standard they expect to deliver across the board, explains Hamish. “The difference with us is that all of our team go between most of the projects doing a bit of everything, covering the high-end residential sites and the commercial sites. “They’re involved with the siteworks from the start, so they get the full scope of the whole project and they get a really good understanding of all the steps that need to be lined up to complete a project both on budget and on time, and it keeps it really interesting for them too.” It’s an ideal set up for apprentices and there are always two or three in the mix with some 38 having gone through Dobbyn Builders over the years, many of whom still work there. They encourage all of their builders to do their paperwork so they are familiar with building code regulations and can register as Licensed Building Practitioners once it’s done. It’s a win for everyone. Dobbyn Builders like to do projects from start to finish whether that’s a full-scale retail centre, a minor dwelling, or a farm building; they’ll cover everything from the planning, earthworks, building and landscaping to the finishing touches. For stage one of Warkworth’s Kowhai Falls Retail Centre, the plans were ready to go. For stage two they worked with the developer from concept stage onwards with their trademark clarity. “We start with what the costs are, what the budget is, and what they can expect for their budget, so everything is very clear right from the start. Then we can do the resource consent, design, build and project management all the way through to optimising the structure and the design for the benefit of owner and tenants alike.” They go wherever they’re needed for their regular clients, both commercial and residential, but many of their high-end residential builds are within easy reach of Warkworth: Omaha, Matakana, Takatu, or up into Northland and further afield to Auckland. It could be a large scale renovation in Milford, an extension in Remuera, a holiday home in the Kaipara Harbour, or a Richard Priest architectural build on the Matakana Coast such as they’ve recently completed: 440sqm, fully off the grid, built with in situ rammed earth 400mm exterior and interior walls, topped off with timber sarking all made from New Zealand native riverwood, built around a central focus with an unusually high stud. Whatever the build, Dobbyn Builders give it their all to deliver above their clients’ expectations, on time and on budget, built to the exacting standards they’ve built their reputation on. Proud to be supporting Dobbyn Builders Congratulations to Dobbyn Builders on a great build. We are proud to have supplied products and services for this project.
