| 3 “Young people shouldn’t have to leave to find work. By building high-value industries in our own backyards, we can create a sustainable future.” T T Kelly Deeks Innovative firmmaking waves Deep Dive Division is at the forefront of developing new technologies for environmental monitoring. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Deep Dive Division Waikato-based commercial and scientific dive company Deep Dive Division is now making waves on the national stage, taking out the Hi-Tech Kamupene Māori o te Tau – Māori Company of the Year award at the prestigious New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards. For founders Tua and Courtney Karalus, the win marks a huge milestone in their six-year journey to establish Aotearoa’s only Māori and Pacific-owned dive company of its kind. “We’d previously won a local award at the Waikato Pacific Business Awards, but this was our first national recognition,” Courtney says. “There’s been a lot of hard work involved, and it’s amazing to see it acknowledged in this way.” Commercial diving is an old industry and has traditionally been dominated by a handful of long-established operators and large research organisations. Tua saw the opportunity to bring something new. After qualifying as a commercial diver, he recognised a gap in the market for high-quality, accurate data collection to support science, infrastructure, and aquaculture. “It was really about creating an industry in the water that was values-based,” he says. “Our goal has always been to create a symbiotic relationship between people and the environment.” Deep Dive Division launched in 2018 with a project in open ocean aquaculture, installing and monitoring structures as part of research and development work. Since then, the business has expanded into a wide range of commercial, environmental, and technological services, from infrastructure inspections and salvage operations to water quality monitoring, biosecurity testing, and advanced robotic survey work. What sets Deep Dive Division apart is its values-led approach. Guided by kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and manaakitanga (care and respect), the team sees themselves as protectors of the marine and freshwater environments they work in. “All of our people are kaitiaki in the water,” Courtney says. “We connect with local communities, we respect their whenua and moana, and we share knowledge with tamariki and rangatahi. That process is as important as the data we collect.” This blend of cultural grounding and technical expertise impressed the Hi-Tech Awards judges, who noted the importance of showcasing Māori and Pacific businesses in technology and innovation spaces where they are often underrepresented. Today, Deep Dive Division is at the forefront of developing new technologies for environmental monitoring. Current projects include a reef system initiative using underwater cameras and artificial intelligence to track water quality and identify marine species in real time. “These reef systems are like social housing underwater,” Tua says. “They create habitats, but just as importantly, they give us data. With this technology, iwi and marae can monitor their own environments rather than waiting for government reports. It’s about empowerment and self-determination.” The company is also advancing work with automated underwater vehicles to support aquaculture, environmental management, and species recognition, and these innovations are attracting strong interest in New Zealand’s fast-growing blue economy. Alongside commercial projects, Tua and Courtney are passionate about building educational pathways into diving, robotics, and marine science. “For coastal communities, this is about creating opportunities at home,” Tua says. “Young people shouldn’t have to leave to find work. By building high-value industries in our own backyards, we can create a sustainable future.” With national recognition now under their belts, the Karalus whānau see their Hi-Tech Award win not as an endpoint, but as a launchpad. “We’re very grateful for the work we’ve been given and the partnerships we’ve built,” Courtney says. “This award gives us the platform to keep moving forward—to innovate, to educate, and to restore balance between people and the environment.” As an independent accountancy and business advisory firm supporting growing businesses like Deep Dive Division, we stay agile and always focused on delivering a service tailored to your business needs. 07 8382169 www.vazeychild.co.nz COMMERCIAL & SCIENT IFIC DIVING | ROBOT ICS | TECHNOLOGY FOLLOW THE JOURNEY, VISIT DEEPDIVEDIVISION.CO.NZ
4 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT McMullen & Wing T T Kim Newth Sea trials going well for electric ferry T T to page 6 Since its launch in June and initial dockside tests at McMullen & Wing, Auckland Transport’s first electric ferry has had multiple testing and commissioning trials in the Hauraki Gulf, passing with flying colours. The vessel is truly a frontrunner in its field, marking the start of Auckland Transport’s long-term transition away from diesel-powered vessels and towards a decarbonised transport future. The new electric ferry is due to be officially handed over to Auckland Transport in the final quarter of 2025. Designed by EV Maritime and built by McMullen & Wing, the 100% battery electric-powered ferry has been acing its sea trials to date and is performing to design expectations in speed, range and handling. “This is our first fully electric ferry and our first carbon fibre ferry - it’s an exciting milestone for our team to be at the forefront of this technology,” says McMullen & Wing Project Manager Craig Sutherland. “Each [sea] trial allows us to commission systems ahead of the official handover. No major adjustments have been required - the vessel has performed extremely well for a first-of-its-kind build.” Once in service, the new electric ferry will be used on the Downtown to Half Moon Bay route, (with charger infrastructure installed at the Half Moon Bay Ferry Terminal). At just over 25m in overall length and with a beam of 8.5m, it has capacity for three crew and up to 200 passengers and boasts a modern functional layout that includes sheltered bicycle and scooter storage inside the main cabin. 6 | Sea trials powering along T T from page 4 McMullen & Wing “These ferries represent a major step towards modernising Auckland’s public transport network and set a benchmark internationally for fast, zeroemission ferries.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT It will be clean and quiet, with a service speed of 23 knots. McMullen & Wing has worked in close collaboration with designer EV Maritime, electrical engineers and electrical installers on this ground-breaking vessel. The ferry’s light, carbon fibre hull has allowed for integration of an electric propulsion system, large battery banks and rapid charging technology. The 10-tonne Freudenberg batteries have over 1.1MWh of battery electric energy storage capacity. “These systems add complexity but also bring exciting new opportunities for innovation,” observes Craig, noting that project partner EV Maritime is currently working on designing other vessels for international clients too. This is the first of two fully electric ferries for Auckland Transport, which is transitioning away from diesel-powered ferries in favour of a modern, decarbonised fleet of electric and electric-hybrid ferries. Currently, Auckland’s ferries burn up 13 million litres of diesel per year, generating the equivalent of 34,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide tailpipe emissions. The switch away from diesel paves the way to big emissions reductions in future, in line with Auckland Transport’s mission to create a cleaner, quieter and more comfortable transport future. At the time of writing, construction of their second electric ferry was already well advanced at McMullen & Wing’s Mt Wellington facility ahead of its planned launch this year. “Lessons from the first build have allowed us to improve efficiency while maintaining the same high standards.” Located on the Tāmaki River, with direct access to the Waitematā Harbour, McMullen & Wing is well-known for boat building excellence. Their skilled team brings over 50 years of experience to new build projects and servicing of commercial craft. Their team is now super-excited to be at the forefront of decarbonisation on the water. McMullen & Wing first became involved with this project in 2018, well before physical construction started. Craig says the construction process itself went smoothly, given that this is the first vessel of its kind from their yard. “We are extremely proud of our part in this. These ferries represent a major step towards modernising Auckland’s public transport network and set a benchmark internationally for fast, zero-emission ferries. Being part of that transition is hugely rewarding for everyone at McMullen & Wing.” Projects of this size and complexity are well within McMullen & Wing’s capabilities. Their team regularly delivers a wide range of commercial and custom vessels, along with refits and servicing projects for a variety of clients. One of their other new construction projects, just getting underway, is of an aluminium Barnett offshore-designed vessel. McMullen & Wing’s facilities include four separate construction buildings, full engineering and joinery workshops, design office and administration block along with a 300 tonne concrete slipway, slipway trolleys, an onsite travel lift and deep water work berths. With the experience gained building these first two electric ferries, McMullen & Wing is well-positioned for future ferry builds. “These vessels put New Zealand at the forefront of electric ferry technology worldwide, and our team is honoured to help lead that.” YOUR ONE STOP PAINT SHOP. 90 Wairau Road Glenfield T 443 3430 wpcpaints.co.nz Proud to supply Hempel’s Silicone Foul Release for AT’s electric ferries by McMullen & Wing. | 7 T TNicki Woodlock Enhancing Auckland’s rail network The new underground rail connection will a llow Auckland’s rail network to carry 19,000 passengers each peak hour from opening, and up to 54,000 passengers an hour by 2051. Auckland Transport: PedLX Tranche Stations REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Aucklanders want public transport that’s convenient, connected, accessible, and reliable. Auckland Transport (AT) is working to grow public transport use to ease congestion, improve access, support the economy, and protect the environment. The City Rail Link is the largest and most transformational public transport development for Auckland. When the City Rail Link (CRL) opens it will double Auckland’s current rail capacity and transform Auckland’s public transport system. This new underground rail connection will allow Auckland’s rail network to carry 19,000 passengers each peak hour from opening, and up to 54,000 passengers an hour by 2051. City Rail Link needs to be managed well to allow the higher train frequency and new faster efficient trains without compromising people’s safety and causing delays to traffic when barrier arms are lowered more often. To cater for this new transport project there is a Level Crossing Removal Programme being implemented by AT, KiwiRail and the NZ Transport Agency to replace level crossings across Auckland with safer connections over the next 30 years. The Level Crossing Removal Programme supports four key projects: the City Rail Link, Papakura–Pukekohe electrification, KiwiRail’s Rail Network Rebuild, and the Third Main Line. These upgrades will boost passenger and freight services, with CRL doubling train frequencies in some areas—making level crossing replacements essential to avoid major delays. Auckland Transport’s Kris Gibson says there are two main benefits from the programme. “Improved safety—by separating people from the rail network—and improved transport network efficiency.” “Signalling is removed leaving a more efficient rail network. It prevents the traffic flow from being stopped. The road and rail both become more efficient”. The project is being is being delivered in stages. Tranche One is complete, with five pedestrian level crossings closed: Corban Estate, Henderson; Lloyd Avenue, Mount Albert; Kingdon Street, Newmarket; Tironui Station Road East, Takaanini; and Homai Station, Wiri. For Tranche Two—construction of three new pedestrian bridges at Glen Innes Station, Te Mahia Station, and Takaanini Station—the team has completed the detailed design. The next stage, Tranche Three, involves the removal and replacement of the Takaanini level crossings, which is currently in design. “We’re applying engineering principles to deliver value for money and efficient solutions, “ says kris. “We’re using a standardised modular bridge product that creates economies of scale and promotes efficiency—delivering faster, cheaper, better outcomes for Auckland, in line with the Mayor’s requirements for AT.” “Fabrication, design, and installation are standardised, which helps with cost forecasting and economies of scale, with the goal of delivering faster and cheaper solutions.” The Level Crossing Removal Programme marks the start of a 30-year program with investment from Auckland Transport and KiwiRail. Looking ahead, the programme will continue with the replacement of level crossings on the Southern and Eastern lines, while the team develops a business case for the level crossings on the Western Line. I’m very happy with how the team has come along and that’s the kind of confidence we’ve built.” CONTRACTING The civil construction sector is built on leadership, resilience, and vision, qualities that Fulton Hogan Auckland’s Josh Wilkinson has demonstrated in abundance having been recognised with the Z Energy Emerging Leader Award at the 2025 Connexis Civil Training Awards presented at the CCNZ National Conference in July. Divisional manager for Fulton Hogan, Josh oversees a slate of significant works within the company’s Auckland Airport portfolio. He stood out for his rapid career trajectory, delivering complex civil infrastructure projects while inspiring the next generation of industry leaders. After starting work with Fulton Hogan Hamilton upon leaving high school, Josh went on to complete his engineering degree at Auckland University, where he co-founded the University of Auckland Civil Engineering Students Association. Awards judges highlighted Josh’s impact on both projects and people since he joined Fulton Hogan Auckland in 2019. In an unprecedented move, Josh became the first person in the company’s 91-year history to be appointed directly into a department manager role upon completing his internship. “I’ve never been one for the spotlight, but it felt good to have the first 10 years of hard work recognised,” he says. “At the end of the day, it’s about managing the team of people around me and the impact they have. I’m very happy with how the team has come along and that’s the kind of confidence we’ve built.” Josh is committed to his involvement in Fulton Hogan’s graduate programme and helped the company reconnect with the civil engineering student association he once co-founded, this time as a gold sponsor. “I’ve come full circle,” he says. “Now I get to be on the other side, helping students on their journey and seeing if I could give a few extra people a nudge toward civil contracting.” Mentorship played a key role in Josh’s own pathway, and he credits Fulton Hogan manager Akshay Thacker for supporting his move to Auckland and encouraging his career growth. He’s equally passionate about promoting trade pathways toward engineering management alongside traditional routes. “Historically there hasn’t been a pathway for trade qualified people to thrive in civil construction, but as an industry we’re going to require more trade qualified people, and really good site leaders,” says Josh. “So, there is career acceleration opening up for those that have a head for construction.” Josh has been managing Fulton Hogan’s Auckland Airport project portfolio for six years and current works include an expansion of the domestic apron to support regional flights, as well as utility and road upgrades and realignments outside the international terminal. The venue offers BBQ celebrations on balconies overlooking the hallowed turf for relaxed Kiwi-style festivities, or food stations designed to prioritise networking and mingling. “From small groups of 50 to large groups of 1,000 guests, choose what suits you,” says Nick. He says that Eden Park is committed to sustainability and community engagement. “We are continually improving our environmental practices and reducing our footprint through waste reduction, energy efficiency and responsible sourcing,” says Nick. “We also work closely with local businesses and neighbours to ensure that each event contributes positively to the wider community. Our Grassy Knoll community garden provides a shared green space that promotes urban biodiversity and engagement, while The Hood, our local residents’ group, stays regularly informed about activities at the stadium and enjoys access to exclusive events such as the annual Hood Christmas Party.” The venue features multiple function rooms and corporate suites that can be configured to suit conferences, product launches, strategy sessions or large banquets.
Total Property Services (TPS) has built its reputation through forging genuine long-term partnerships, with Eden Park serving as a prime example of how deep client relationships drive comprehensive service solutions. “Our ethos is about partnership and we work closely with them to nd solutions depending on how their needs have developed over time,” explains Kenny Harris, Chief Executive O cer of TPS. “Our relationship with Eden Park demonstrates the breadth of our service o ering. We pride ourselves on being a one-stop shop where we work with owners and facility managers to deliver services they need.” TPS has partnered with New Zealand's national stadium for a decade and it exempli es TPS's unique structure, which operates several disciplines allowing it to tackle diverse challenges, from everyday commercial cleaning to during major events such as rugby test matches, international tournaments and specialist height access work. “For example, during Eden Park's preparation for the FIFA Women's World Cup, TPS replaced all stadium lighting systems, including abseiling o buildings to ensure compliance with international broadcasting standards. We also helped design, build and install Eden Park's popular roof walk attraction through TPS Phase 1 division, which specialises in height access solutions,” explains Kenny. “We get to know our clients and their strategies so we can provide the right solutions and outcomes within their budgets.” Kenny says a big part of the success of TPS is its people. The company's workforce of approximately 600 employees has its head o ce in Auckland but serves clients throughout the North Island. “By employing all sta directly, TPS ensures consistency, accountability and high internal capability across every contract,” says Kenny. “Through a challenging business landscape we have consistently looked after our people and have been rewarded with a loyal and passionate team who take care of our customers and their assets so they can focus on what they do best.” The company employs a full-time in-house training manager quali ed to deliver NZQA-accredited training up to Level 3 and also engages with government agencies and industry leaders to represent cleaner rights through yearly union negotiations. Sustainability is another important cornerstone of the business. The company has introduced rescue beehives to client sites, including rooftop installations that produce branded honey for sta and clients alongside supporting pollination e orts. It has also developed circular economy models that use building green waste to support living gardens producing food for organisational consumption. TPS also utilises cleaning methods that reduce carbon emissions and equipment that minimises power consumption and chemical use. Kenny says the company was amongst the rst in New Zealand to adopt environmentally-friendly biodegradable cleaning products for commercial applications. “We continually look for innovation in machinery and methods to drive greater e ciency, sustainability and e ectiveness,” says Kenny. “Recent investments include hard- oor machinery that strips and seals without harsh chemicals, removing laborious tasks for workers and keeping environments safer.” TPS's wider client portfolio is testament to the success of its approach and includes major property developers Precinct Properties, dairy giant Fonterra, international property consultants CBRE and JLL, St John's Theological College and Auckland University of Technology. Kenny says that TPS aims to continue to expand its in uence across New Zealand's commercial property sector, maintaining its position as the country's leading 100 per cent New Zealand-owned property services provider.
