New Zealand’s first fully 3D concrete printed residential show home, has scooped three regional awards at the 2025 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. Hamilton-based Iconic Construction has made bold steps into the future of building. The company’s Hamilton Show home at 1 City View Terrace, within the Brymer Heights subdivision, is a unique concrete home designed by The Architecture People and built by Iconic 3D Printed Construction in partnership with 3D printing specialists QOROX. Demonstrating what’s possible with the latest in 3D printing technology, the show home clinched a Gold in the Show home category, a Regional Category award and a Regional Special award. Judges praised the show home’s sustainability, build speed, and innovation. North-facing glazing, smart roof overhangs, and minimal construction waste reinforced the home’s environmental credentials. The whole house, complete with interior fit-out, joinery and internal doors, achieved code of compliance in 20 weeks. The build generates minimal waste and even offcuts of foam and non-recyclable plastics found new life as fill inside 3D-printed outdoor seating. Iconic Construction general manager Johnny Gordon says the show home is being used as a temporary office for the company. “The build itself consists of 42 precision-printed panels (totalling 217sqm) produced off-site in only 24 hours of print time. Construction took just 99 days from starting the earthworks on site to completing the build.” “People are surprised when they walk in. Common feedback we often get is, oh it’s much softer and much warmer than I thought it was going to be.” “That is thanks to foam insulation inside the walls, giving them a thermal rating of R2.7 and great acoustic performance. It’s above industry standard.” Inside you’ll find a high-spec kitchen with stone benchtops, built-in wardrobe systems, tiled bathrooms, and floor-to-ceiling doors that enhance the sense of space. “It has 2.550m ceiling height throughout the house and in the master bedroom we’ve plastered the walls which gives it a really nice Mediterranean look for visitors to see what a plastered wall would look like.” The landscaping also utilised 3D concrete printing to form curved retaining walls connecting the landscaping to the house design. Iconic Construction has already delivered New Zealand’s first 3D concrete printed commercial uilding, a childcare centre, and is now expanding its reach across Waikato, Auckland, and beyond. “We’ve recently purchased a robot with a goal of setting up in Christchurch. This will allow us to grow into the South Island market,” says Johnny. While the cost of 3D printing a house is slightly more than traditional methods, the real savings come from the speed of build and design flexibility. Curves, intricate features, and unique structures that would otherwise be time-consuming and expensive can now be delivered efficiently. “3D concrete printing has many applications from seawall protection to stormwater rain gardens. “In America, entire subdivisions of 200 concrete printed homes are being built.
