Business North November 2025

| 77 T T Sue Russell Company now servicing wider area Mid-North Towing offers customers 24/7 break-down and towing services. Mid-North Towing CONTRACTING It was George Price’s step-dad, Tony Taylor, who started Mid-North Towing in the early 90s and remained at the helm by himself until 2017. When he first started managing the business he operated it on his own. Today however, George along with his sister Michaela and seven others take care of the day to day business operations. Based in Kaikohe, Northland, since 1995, and more recently opening a second yard in Waipapa, Kerikeri, Mid-North Towing services the region north of Whangarei, encompassing Kaitaia, Kaikohe, Kerikeri, Hokianga, over to Paihia and everywhere in between. George says the business is continuing to grow and he’s positive about new business opportunities as they present themselves. “With the large range of services offered and gear we have, our team are always engaged and busy.” The fleet of thirteen plus vehicles includes five slide deck recovery and transport trucks, a hiab truck, along with a large 8-wheeler slide deck truck used for transporting larger vehicles and equipment. Also in the fleet there are tractors and other vehicles and equipment for off-road situations (including beaches, paddocks and waterways). It’s a time of transition as well for George, as sister Michaela slowly comes into the business. “With the continued business growth we have become more self-sufficient.” Mid-North Towing offers customers 24/7 break-down and towing services. George says he’s keen to see the business offer a wider array of services. “We’re strategically positioned in Kaikohe and Waipapa, Kerikeri. With team members living in both Kaikohe and Kerikeri, it’s logistically possible for us to cover a wide area with ease.” George says there’s an element of uncertainty as to what each day will bring, but this adds to the variety of the job. “We sort of have to be a jack of all trades out on the road, but our main services are vehicle recovery, breakdowns and salvaging work. Breakdowns include tyre changes, lockouts, as well as jump-starts etc. “If a vehicle needs assistance then we can usually offer the equipment and skills to take care of the issue.” Services also extend to removing abandoned vehicles, recovery of vehicles involved in road accidents, transporting cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, trailers, transportation of campervans and long distance haulage, etc. George says its hard to find people who suit this industry. “A police clearance along with a ‘fit and proper person’ check are all part of obtaining the correct licence for vehicle recovery. You also have to be mechanically minded, be prepared to do after hours and deal with all sorts of situations that come with the job. Some of these can be challenging at times. As the business end of 2025 approaches George says he’s happy with the performance of the company and knows he has a quality team working with him. “Our reputation has been built on providing the best possible service, being available no matter what the time and situation. We work in some fairly challenging places, so I’m happy with where things are at for the business at this time. Having the new site at Waipapa has been a strategically sound development.” BUILT TO TILT Whether you want a new or used truck, we can engineer a tilt tray to perfectly match your needs and budget.
