Revex Piling CONTRACTING Despite being a relatively new company, Revex Piling is making significant inroads in providing screw piling services and expertise throughout New Zealand. Director and general manager Rodney Appleby says the past four years since the Auckland- based business was founded in 2021 have been both challenging, especially with starting during the covid pandemic, but also exciting. Revex Piling is headed by three in-house directors, Rodney, Glen Budden and Mike Abbott who are all chartered mechanical and professional engineers with a high level of industry experience. There is also a fourth director, Mike Sullivan, who has a construction background but does not work directly in the business. “I believe we know screw piling better than anyone in New Zealand. We have surrounded ourselves with skilled and capable people, both at a management level and those working on project sites,” Rodney says. Every structure is designed by structural and geotechnical engineers based on loads and ground conditions specific to each individual site. While most structures are traditionally designed with bored piles or driven piles, virtually any structure can be supported by screw piles, he says. “In fact, in some situations, screw piling can offer considerable advantages over other piling methods.” While most structures are traditionally on bored piles or driven piles, virtually any structure can be supported by screw piles. “The key advantage of screw piling is speed, while going really deep. Most of the time the ground is typically really poor, and that’s where screw piling excels. While the price of other methods ’ price goes up, that drives our prices go down. We would typically have a lot less variations, and so price certainty is a factor our clients consider.” Screw piles are very versatile. Now achieving more than over6,000kN (kilonewtons) compression, and greater than 3,000kN tension, they can also be designed for lighter structures of as little as 50kN. Revex Piling has undertaken projects throughout New Zealand, and a vital service provided that adds value for clients is early contractor involvement (ECI) for feasibility and budgeting. Revex provided screw piles for a Southland project expected to be completed late 2026. “We were contracted early to see if screw piles could offer a benefit compared to traditional bored piling and we gave that early advice based on both technical specifications, the kilonewtons and the lateral loads design-wise, but also price, and they said it ticks the boxes.” This project also provided the opportunity for Rodney to make a presentation in Invercargill about technical aspects of screw piling. “We’d like to think that we are leaders in our industry and therefore help to educate, so that presentation was on load testing and we had people from the polytech come out as well as engineers from Invercargill and surrounding areas. We did something similar for the University of Canterbury engineering students.” Other projects include drilling 200 screw piles to 20 metres deep in Christchurch and drilling around 700 piles to a depth of 40 metres for a major Auckland infrastructure project ongoing.
