Green Valley Dairies’ state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is uniquely located at Marphona Farms, which started as a family business in 1983 with the conversion of some tough country at Mangatawhiri. Founders Bruce and Jessie Pulman subsequently grew their family farm venture into an industry-leading dairy operation, producing both regular and organic milk. Marphona Farms is AsureQuality Organic certified and was also the first dairy farm in the country to be recognised under the New Zealand Food Safety Authority’s Registered Product Safety Programme (PSP). A forward thinking decision in 2003 – to pursue a route trade strategy – kickstarted Green Valley Dairies’ success as an independent dairy processor and solution provider, focussed on excellence. “We began delivering milk to Hamilton and South Auckland through the route trade, supplying independent retailers like corner dairies, and then went further by supplying cafes and other food service enterprises,” explains Green Valley Dairies’ General Manager Mark Pulman, who joined his parents in the business in 2018. Today, Green Valley’s Barista range of milk products is sought-after in the food service sector. Their organic milk delivers just what’s needed – a great taste and creamy foam that lasts in the cup. Marphona Farms milks more than 3,000 cows through three rotary sheds and one herringbone shed. Mark’s brother Philip is heavily involved in running the farm side of the business. “One of the advantages of milking yearround and managing feed is we know the cows are getting just what they need to produce milk with those frothing properties that are ideal for café baristas.” Green Valley milk is also prized for its taste, freshness and long shelf life. Consistent best sellers include their Full Cream and Dark Blue Organic and Premium Milk products. As well as producing their own branded product, Green Valley Dairies manufactures private label, base ingredients and branded products for a number of domestic and export brand owners. “We process over 20 million litres of fresh milk each year. Since 2003, we have expanded the plant to include additional pasteurisers and re-filling lines. One of our cow sheds is adjacent to the factory and milk is piped direct from there to the factory. “We also have milk coming in on tankers from other independent farms, as well as other cowsheds on our property.” Green Valley’s skilled team and modern plant means they are well-equipped for contract packing, and processing of milk to cater for particular points of difference, such as customer requirements for specific milk-fat percentages. Innovation is in this company’s DNA, with automation now increasingly taking the heavy lifting out of the production line and supporting a safer work environment. Different products are carefully scheduled through the plant, with batch separation well-managed. Since 2016, Green Valley Dairies has partnered with Reclaim, New Zealand’s largest privately owned processor of recyclable materials, to reduce waste, and Green Valley Dairies actively promotes waste-busting options, such as the 18-litre Udder Way Keg. As a responsible dairy innovator, Green Valley Dairies is well-positioned for further strong growth into the future.
