| 63 Gleeson Group The acquisition of Huntly Quarry in 2018 means that Gleeson Group can supply as well as transport quality aggregates to projects throughout Auckland and the Waikato from their strategically positioned site near State Highway 1. Thanks to K Bloxx up to 20,000 kilograms of concrete a day that would otherwise be wasted due to over-ordering and weather-related cancellations can be recycled and repurposed instead of going to land ill. Kane Goudie started his working life as a diesel mechanic but when he was talking to friends about the amount of concrete being returned to their plant, which happens to be right next door to the East Tamaki yard he works out of, he saw an opportunity. “At that time there was a shortage of concrete blocks so we put the two together and started recycling concrete waste into blocks. The research showed that concrete makes up 7% of all waste in New Zealand so we igured there had to be a better way,” says Kane. They soon had buy-in from local concrete companies including the one next door, all wanting to be part of this recycling e ort. Instead of loads of wet concrete being tipped out back at the yard and readied to get taken to land ill, the concrete is instead diverted to the yard and poured into K Bloxx’ specialised moulds. They chose a European standard interlocking design which makes blocks that it well with the New Zealand market and have been proven overseas, explains Kane. “In 2023 in the UK they used these blocks on a drilling rig called the Noble Intrepid. It’s the biggest jack-up rig in the world and they used them to support that while it was undergoing maintenance so that reinforces that they’re a quality product used in some massive projects overseas.” They can be used to make bulk material and feed bins as easily as they can o er a quick, easy ,weatherproof solution for retaining walls, and they’re modular so they’re easily deployed, easily relocatable and easily added to or removed if required. K Bloxx recycle 100% of the concrete they take, with anything not used in the blocks taken to a plant where it’s recycled into base materials for roading and other civil projects. They o er custom solutions along with their concrete blocks, with a growing line in security camera mounts and tiny house foundations. They’re proud that their core business is keeping waste out of land ill while producing a top-quality product, and as a small company they respond quickly to enquiries o ering prompt lexible service. If you’ve got a problem they can solve give them a call and if they can help they’ll do their best to come back with a quote the same day.
