This year marks 10 years since Karyn and Luke Rosewarne made the leap into forestry establishing Rosewarne Yarding Limited and growing a business from a single second-hand hauler to a full crew operation. Their children, Heath (10) and Wyatt (8), have been part of the journey learning about hard work, perseverance, and teamwork. In 2013 the couple left Auckland for Northland to join Luke’s family in the forestry industry, a trade that has been part of the Rosewarne story since the 1970s, when Luke’s father first entered the field, eventually establishing Rosewarne Contractors in 1987. For Luke it was a complete career change after years as a boatbuilder. He started from scratch learning to service, repair, and operate forestry machinery. Karyn initially returned to social work but soon joined Luke in building the family business. By 2015, Rosewarne Yarding was formally established. A major turning point came with the purchase of a Madill 124 swing yarder, the start of a steep learning curve for Luke and a bold investment in their future. “We started with that one piece of machinery,” says Karyn. “Once we had enough equity, our goal was to own a full crew, the equipment and people needed to run it.” By 2019 that goal became reality. As Rosewarne Contractors scaled back their operation, Karyn and Luke took over Crew 78. Every member of the team chose to stay on, a vote of confidence that meant the world to them. “That was huge,” says Karyn. “Less than a year later Covid hit, which was a real test, but it prepared us for the ups and downs of forestry.” Luke’s dedication was recognised in 2022 when he was named Skilled Professional of the Year at the Northland Forestry Awards. The award was endorsed by Rayonier Matariki Forestry Management, reflecting his skill, leadership, and the strong, long-standing partnership between Rosewarne Yarding and Rayonier Matariki. All of Rosewarne Yarding’s work over the past decade has been with Rayonier Matariki Forestry Management, New Zealand’s second-largest corporate forest manager. That enduring relationship reflects trust, shared values, and high standards, giving stability for investment in people and machinery while shaping the way the company operates today. Trusted relationships with contractors and key suppliers are central to Rosewarne Yarding’s approach to the industry. “Brandt is one of those important partners. We purchased our first John Deere felling machine from them in 2022 and we added another loader this year,” says Karyn. Now, as they celebrate a decade in forestry Karyn and Luke see it as both a milestone and a springboard. With Heath and Wyatt sharing the journey, Rosewarne Yarding remains firmly rooted in family values, with a clear focus on responsibility, growth, and contributing to one of New Zealand’s most vital export industries.
