40 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Armitage Group T T Karen Phelps Combining technology and expertise The technology solutions Armitage Group provides and maintains are at the cutting edge of infrastructure development. Technology specialist Armitage Group stands apart due to its family business values and long-term commitment, says managing director Zachary Lawrence-Sansbury, whose father Paul founded the company in 1994. Past and present employees include shareholder family members, spouses and extended family of staff, ensuring the family ethos permeates every level of the business. “We are proud to be a family business and the people that started the business are largely still at the helm,” says Zachary. “The longest serving staff member has worked here for 28 years and a number have worked over 20 years in the core management team, which provides strength of knowledge,” he says. He says the breadth of Armitage Group’s capabilities sets it apart in New Zealand’s technology landscape. While many competitors focus on narrow specialisations, the company operates across multiple sectors through its various divisions: transport, fire, security, monitoring and surveillance. The technology solutions Armitage Group provides and maintains are at the cutting edge of infrastructure development. Its intelligent transport systems encompass everything from CCTV and emergency telephony to variable message signs, lane control systems, and sophisticated telemetry sensors. The fire protection division offers comprehensive life safety systems, and the monitoring and surveillance capability provides 24/7 oversight for critical infrastructure nationwide. Originally created to provide consistent end-to-end service for existing clients requiring 24/7 remote monitoring, the monitoring and surveillance division now serves the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), local councils, and Ministry of Education schools across the country. Zachary says the team has delivered systems for some of New Zealand’s most challenging infrastructure developments including the Waterview Tunnel, Victoria Park Tunnel, and the Puhoi to Warkworth motorway extension. Commercial clients include Auckland International Airport, ASB headquarters, commercial data centres and the Park Hyatt Hotel Auckland. Armitage Group is also a Site Safe Member and Totika H&S Pre-qualified Contractor and holds ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environmental) and ISO 45001 (Health and Safety) certifications. The company also holds the distinction of being the only specialist technology company that is an NZTA 1A prequalified contractor, says Zachary. “Effectively this means that we have reached the highest grade and this positions Armitage Group as one of the few companies capable of undertaking the most complex and sensitive transport infrastructure projects in New Zealand.” The Armitage Group team is currently offering its services on the NZTA O Mahurangi - Penlink project for Fulton Hogan, part of the Alliance which will create a critical link between State Highway 1 and Whangaparaoa Peninsula. Simultaneously it is delivering the NZTA national State Highway Schools Programme providing upgraded speed and safety signage including electronic variable speed limit signs across over 140 schools. The company’s mission statement encapsulates a commitment to longevity: to deliver projects today and maintain them tomorrow by providing superior performance through people and technology. Zachary says this approach has proven particularly valuable in an industry where ongoing maintenance and support can be as critical as initial installation. “We have built our business on trust and integrity with our people at its core,” he says. “We have formed firm professional relationships that have ensured that a large proportion of our work is long-standing or by direct or repeat engagement,” The company’s operational reach extends throughout New Zealand and Australia. Based in Auckland and with an office in Wellington, it has teams in Tauranga, Hamilton and Christchurch. It was only last year the company expanded into the South Island due to demand for services where it aims to grow its presence. There is also subsidiary company Armitage Group Pty Ltd in Sydney. With over 50 personnel across multiple locations and a track record spanning three decades, Zachary says that Armitage Group’s combination of technical expertise, family values and proven delivery capability positions it at the forefront as New Zealand continues to invest heavily in infrastructure development.
