Auckland-based architectural design firm Buildology recently completed the project that demonstrates its philosophy of working sympathetically with existing structures to create dramatic improvements to how families live and move through their homes. Buildology director Romé Smit says the Remuera property presented a deceptive façade; appearing as a modest single-storey weatherboard home from the street, it actually drops down at the back to reveal a two-storey building. However, the original layout created significant challenges for daily living. “People would park and come into an old, low ceiling dark space with a boxed in staircase leading upstairs,” she explains. “The entry’s poor functionality prompted a comprehensive re-imagining of the home’s circulation and spatial relationships.” The transformation centred on creating a more open and inviting entry space by removing an unused balcony patio over the entrance and installing a dramatic two-storey void featuring a curved artistic staircase. This bold intervention flooded the previously dark entrance with natural light while still establishing visual connections between levels. At the stair’s summit, designers created a reading nook and coffee station illuminated by a feature skylight. “This established a transition between the view of the pool and the landscape over the entryway with a background view of the new kitchen. The entry now possesses a grander feel to it and connects upstairs and downstairs,” says Romé. The upper level required equally thoughtful intervention. “Upstairs was a collection of rooms and very dark,” says Romé. “We reoriented the flow of spaces to improve both functionality and natural light penetration throughout.” A particularly innovative solution involved building an enclosed louvre roof over the garage, creating a transition space to the outdoors which can be closed off to elements. Romé says this addition required careful engineering to maintain the master bedroom’s prized city views, necessitating minimal post support to avoid blocking vistas. She says the project exemplifies Buildology’s collaborative approach, which Romé identifies as the firm’s defining characteristic. “We surround ourselves with likeminded people who are focused on doing a good job and are great at finding solutions. “We get the wider team on board early in the design process so they can each add their expertise. “This project was the culmination of multiple businesses including Kitchen Architecture NZ, which designed the kitchen and scullery, Donna White Interior Design and builder Renovation Works. Everyone was really happy about the end result. “The renovation’s success even attracted attention from previous owners, who saw it on social media and were intrigued by what had been achieved.” The approach reflects Romé’s broader philosophy about architectural intervention. “We holistically changed how the space worked but we didn’t reinvent the wheel. We worked with what was already there. It was about sensitivity to the home’s original character while dramatically improving its functionality.” Founded in 2011, Buildology has built its reputation on being small enough to have personal connections with individual clients but large enough to manage the demands of the fast-paced industry. The firm’s portfolio spans from simple additions to complex renovations and new builds. “It’s about helping people, no matter how big or small the project, a small change can make a big difference to people’s lives,” says Romé. “For example, a recent bedroom addition to an ex-state house made such a difference to how they live and that’s what I find really rewarding.” Structural | Geotechnical | Civil Specialists in Glass and Aluminium Balustrades and Pool fencing solutions For Residential and Commercial projects.
