108 | A masterclass in thoughtful design The home has four distinct pavilions – guest wing, central living zone, primary suite and garaging – each linked with flat-roofed sections, home to the entry, powder room, laundry and library. Residence Group T T Sue Russell BUILDING Pukekohe-based Residence Group Ltd. is in its infancy as a company, but already pushing well above its weight, as recognised this year in the regional Master Builders House of the Year awards. Owner/operators Aaron Mowll and Jessica Valintine each bring their years of experience and capabilities to the table, Aaron in building and project management, and Jessica in the interior design space. Their collaborative approach adds value to their client’s home building experience and outcomes. “While we have separate companies, we work together on some wonderful projects, including the home in Pukekohe that received the accolades from the judges at this year’s regional awards.” The awards were announced on 9 August with Residence Group Ltd. receiving Regional Category Winner in the New Home $1.5million - $2million category, Gold Award and Top 100 homes nationally. “We were involved in the design of this lovely home, described as a ‘Crafted Retreat’ from the start. The owner loved our own home which is in the same area and wanted to build something similar but different,” says Aaron. Judges said the home offered a masterclass in thoughtful design. At 333sqm the home has four distinct pavilions – guest wing, central living zone, primary suite and garaging – each linked with flat-roofed sections, home to the entry, powder room, laundry and library. There’s plenty of space to be together or find your own peaceful oasis, with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and two living areas. Striking gabled ceilings in the living and primary pavilions add light and volume. “It’s not a fussy home and there’s a lovely flow between the spaces. Even the space above the garage has been utilised as an attic adding significant storage.” In the brief, the owners sought a balance between sustainability, craftsmanship and relaxed comfort with the layout providing a sense of welcome for family and friends alike. With an amalgamation of vertical cedar cladding and rendered brick there’s a wonderful balance of warmth and durability. Stone work embellishes the statement fireplace and wine-display unit as well as the entrance, offering a sense of strength and permanence. Jessica says a strength Aaron brings to a project is his ability to input cost-effective ways to achieve the key elements clients desire in their home. “This means his input into the design in the early stages helps to ensure a practical buildability in its design, bearing in mind the client’s budget and priorities.” Both agree, the idea of being able to close off the guest wing is an important element in the home’s design. On the day Business North spoke with Jess and Aaron, the home was being judged for the national awards due to take place on November i22 n Christchurch. “The owners had a lot of existing furniture and art pieces they wanted in the home and where the space demanded it we added some interest in the detailing,” says jess. “There’s a sense of timelessness and simplicity to the home even though it is not simple,” says Jess. Both say working together on projects is a wonderful way to provide clients with all the experience and insights they have to offer. “We’re a small bespoke team who love bringing positive outcomes to home owners in an easy, enjoyable way.” Mitre 10 MEGA 12 Wrightson Way, Pukekohe 09 238 5559 www.mitre10.co.nz Opening Hours Monday - Friday: 7am - 6pm Saturday/Sunday: 8am - 5pm Public Holidays: 8am - 5pm Jon Sundgren Construction North Island M 021 2178271 E office@jsconstruct.co.nz @jonsundgrenconstruction_ltd
