BUILTsmart: Te Whare Awhi – Huntly West Community Hub BUILDING When the Huntly community needed a new hub for connection and support, local company BUILTsmart didn’t just build a building - it donated it and demonstrated how innovative construction methods can transform project delivery, giving back to the town that’s been its home for over 40 years. Te Whare Awhi, a place of care, support and connection for the people of Huntly, was constructed in just ten weeks using BUILTsmart’s factory-based methodology. Built on a section of the Huntly West Domain reserve provided by Council via longterm lease, the facility is now run by Raahui Pookeka Community Centres Trust, hosting programmes, workshops, food rescue donations, community lunches and family support services. “It was an awesome project to be involved in, knowing it will really benefit the community,” says Marc Clinch, project manager at BUILTsmart. “We employ locals and are a real part of the Huntly community, so we were happy to be able to donate this building.” The project showcased the dramatic advantages of prefabricated construction. “We built it in the factory in Huntly and then delivered it to site,” explains Marc. “We build under cover and have big open bays so we can work on the outside and inside simultaneously and are not dependent on weather. “This really speeds up the process a lot. The building then simply had to be delivered to site, placed on foundations, and finishing touches added, such as decking, minimising disruption to neighbouring properties and proving more cost-effective than traditional methods.” This approach has been BUILTsmart’s calling card since Philip Leather established the family-owned business in Huntly in 1982. Now operating for over 40 years, it has built its reputation on delivering affordable building solutions without compromising quality, completing contracts on time and within budget. The company’s factory methodology offers compelling advantages across all its projects. The benefits include eliminating weather delays, maintaining high standards with quality assurance, better health and safety and improved recycling and waste reduction. Perhaps most significantly, the approach allows simultaneous progress on multiple fronts. “We can be constructing off site and as soon as the onsite consents are approved, we can deliver the building,” explains Marc. “With traditional build methodology the construction wouldn’t be able to commence until the onsite consents had been approved. This effectively halves project delivery timeframes.” Building under cover with 50 construction bays at its main Huntly facility, BUILTsmart can construct up to 40% faster than conventional methods. The company’s manufacturing capabilities now span three strategic locations across the North Island, with factories in Huntly, Feilding, and a joint venture with Toiti Tairawhiti Housing Limited in Gisborne operating 24 bays. BUILTsmart has a diverse range of clients from first home buyers, farmers wanting worker accommodation and schools needing classrooms. The company delivers throughout the North Island, offering around 20 plans or design-and-build options with the ability to build up to 166sqm in a single level, plus recently developed two-storey homes.
