The company combines hands-on building expertise with the rare advantage of a managing director whose legal background ensures paperwork, compliance, and contracts run smoothly. Sam Hartnett founded Built Construction five years ago, after trading in the courtroom for the construction site. His journey from lawyer to builder has shaped a company that delivers both the craftsmanship clients expect and the professional project management that keeps complex renovations on track. “Renovations are never straightforward,” Sam says. “You can have a set of plans, but as soon as you open up a wall you’re dealing with unknowns. Our role is to anticipate those challenges, adapt quickly, and guide clients through without stress.” That problem-solving ability was honed early in Sam’s career. Starting his apprenticeship at 30, he cut his teeth on everything from cowsheds to high-end architectural homes before launching Built Construction. The breadth of that experience, from farm sheds with no plans, to detailed architectural builds with tight tolerances, has created a team culture of flexibility and ingenuity. “If we haven’t done it before, we’ll figure it out,” Sam says. “That attitude has been with us since the start and it’s what sets our builders apart.” Built Construction specialises in residential renovations, managing projects from concept through to completion. The company’s trusted network of subcontractors – plumbers, electricians, designers and more – allows homeowners to deal with a single point of contact while Built takes responsibility for the detail. “Renovations involve so many moving parts,” Sam says. “We bring the whole team together and manage the process so clients don’t have to juggle trades or stress about timing.” Launching in 2020 meant Built Construction faced its baptism under pressure. With industry-wide material shortages and supply chains under strain, Sam and his team learned fast how to plan ahead, keep projects moving, and maintain open communication with clients. “Like every builder at the time, we were literally driving around picking up four lengths of timber here and six there,” Sam recalls. “Those global shortages forced us to adapt. For us, it meant getting our systems right very early on, and those disciplines are still paying off today.” The company’s measured, steady growth since then has helped it weather the ups and downs of the market, and Sam says passing the five-year milestone feels significant. “You hear the statistics about how many businesses don’t make it that far,” he says. “We’ve kept our feet on the ground, grown at a sensible pace, and built strong relationships. That’s been key.” Sam says renovating isn’t just about moving walls or updating finishes. “It’s about guiding homeowners through every stage. “From uncovering what’s behind the wall linings, to coordinating the last coat of paint so they end up with a home that truly reflects them. 021 025 13242 dlcdesignnz@gmail.com D L C D E S I G N Experienced Architectural Technicians & Designers Your Home Renovation Specialist www.builtconstruction.co.nz
