Winning the Waikato Regional Master Builders House of the Year Supreme Award and Mitre 10 Craftsmanship Award for a stunning Rangitahi Peninsula home, plus a Regional Gold for a Whangamata bach validates the quality and craftsmanship delivered by Hamilton based, FV Design & Build. Under the leadership of licensed builder and company owner Francis Van Den Einden, the tight-knit FV Design & Build team continues to produce homes across the Waikato that combine design ambition with meticulous craftsmanship. Winning the Supreme Award for the region means the project will compete nationally. While the Supreme and Gold Awards carry prestige, Francis says the Regional Mitre 10 Craftsmanship Award is the most coveted amongst building peers. “As a builder, that’s the one you want to win,” he says. “There’s only one handed out each year in the region, and it goes to the builder with the highest score for workmanship.” The award is steeped in tradition and was presented by life member of the Master Builders Association Mark May and etched with the names of respected builders past and present. “When I saw my name on that trophy alongside the people I’ve looked up to for 20 years, it was pretty special. It’s validation that what we’re doing by keeping it small, keeping it personal, and putting out our best work consistently, is where we want to be.” The regional supreme award-winning home in the $2m to $4m category, is situated near the tip of a slender peninsula in Raglan’s inner harbour. Merging seamlessly into its coastal setting the home’s exterior cladding is a blend of vertical cedar weatherboard, dark metal, and touches of Venetian plaster. Designed by Noel Jessop Architecture the 335sqm single-level house was described by judges as outstanding in both design and execution. Hardwood decking stretches along the sea-facing length of the home, while a massive stacking door opens the living area fully to the deck and out to an in-ground pool and harbour views. At the southern end of the house is the garage plus attached room/man cave, bathroom and laundry. Hemlock timber feature ceilings and internal cedar walls add depth and warmth to the interior which features underfloor heating throughout. The layout delivers four bedrooms, three bathrooms, three lounges, home office and media room. Polished concrete floors and timber detailing make a warm sleek finish. “The clients wanted a practical family home with a sleek aesthetic, but also something that would make the most of the site.” In contrast to the scale and budget of the Raglan build, FV Design & Build’s Gold Award winner is a Whangamata bach, designed by Evoke Architecture, to replace a damaged bach on a beloved family site. The 155sqm home with wrap around decking conveys a relaxing beach feel close to the white sand coastline. Exterior cladding is warm vertical cedar and dark coloured steel for robust, low maintenance protection. The bach has four bedrooms, including master with ensuite, a rumpus/bunk room, three bathrooms and laundry, while the openplan living space connects to multiple outdoor zones. An outdoor shower keeps the sand outside of the house.
