Coresteel Far North BUILDING Coresteel Far North is based in Kaitaia, servicing the district with the design and build of bespoke steel-framed sheds of all shapes and sizes. “Much of the work for our company, Kaitaia Civil Construction 2015 Ltd, was in Coresteel buildings. So when the opportunity to purchase the Coresteel franchise came in 2019, it was a natural fit for my partner and builder Clifford Wallace, along with our colleague Fred Lee,” says director Shirley Neho. With Fred a very experienced builder, and having their own construction team, Shirley describes it as a perfect fit, and says Coresteel designs great sheds. “There’s no limit to size or shape, and we have the support of Coresteel’s own in-house designers, draftspeople and engineers.” Coresteel’s exclusive steel structural systems, the Bracketless Portal System and DonoBeam, allow a wide variety of shed sizes and forms to be constructed. “Our sheds are super-strong, and each client gets exactly what they want and need from their shed. Structural integrity is incredibly important to us and it’s what the brand’s reputation is built on,” Shirley says. Each project begins with a thorough discussion about the intended uses for the building, along with a site visit to see what is logistically possible. Shirley says the Far North has its own unique geotech, with 30 different types of soil structures that can impact what can be built on a particular site. Along with managing the design process, Shirley also takes care of the consenting process if required. “Some of our customers like to do their own project management, but very often, it’s left with us to tick all the boxes with Council and construct the building complete.” It’s very important, Shirley says, that a building’s design is future-proofed as much as possible. “I stress this with our clients, to think beyond their current specific needs to imagine what else they may in the future wish to have housed in the shed.” The components of a Coresteel building are made at the company’s manufacturing plant in Whangarei and arrive on-site as a flat-pack that’s constructed once the concrete foundations have been poured and cured. One project Shirley recalls was the building of a shed to house all the machinery at the Largus Avocado orchard at Waiharara, owned and operated by The New Zealand Avocado Company. “They already had the concrete foundation down, and because it was a working facility, while we were finishing the back of the build, the front was already being used.” And some projects really strike a chord, as was the case with the Coastguard boat shed at Pukenui. “The boat shed is right next to the water, making it easy for the boat to be launched and recovered. Measuring 18m x 9m and with a knee height of 4.3m, the shed is 162sqm and acts as the base for the Coastguard service in the area.” Shirley says a strong passion of hers is to care and support the local community. “I really care about our suppliers and we try as best we can to source everything locally.” “Our sheds are super-strong, and each client gets exactly what they want and need from their shed. Structural integrity is incredibly important to us and it’s what the brand’s reputation is built on”: Business has been somewhat quieter of late; however, Shirley says, the quality of Coresteel material and construction systems speaks for itself. “It’s certainly a brand we’re proud to have our names and reputations associated with.” She especially enjoys the problem-solving that comes into designing and constructing a building fit-for-purpose on its unique site. “We know we’re building a space of real value and importance to our customers, and it’s wonderful to drive past a shed, be it in a rural situation, commercial or industrial setting, and see it fulfil exactly what is demanded of it.” Roofing with Style
