4 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT McMullen & Wing T T Kim Newth Sea trials going well for electric ferry T T to page 6 Since its launch in June and initial dockside tests at McMullen & Wing, Auckland Transport’s first electric ferry has had multiple testing and commissioning trials in the Hauraki Gulf, passing with flying colours. The vessel is truly a frontrunner in its field, marking the start of Auckland Transport’s long-term transition away from diesel-powered vessels and towards a decarbonised transport future. The new electric ferry is due to be officially handed over to Auckland Transport in the final quarter of 2025. Designed by EV Maritime and built by McMullen & Wing, the 100% battery electric-powered ferry has been acing its sea trials to date and is performing to design expectations in speed, range and handling. “This is our first fully electric ferry and our first carbon fibre ferry - it’s an exciting milestone for our team to be at the forefront of this technology,” says McMullen & Wing Project Manager Craig Sutherland. “Each [sea] trial allows us to commission systems ahead of the official handover. No major adjustments have been required - the vessel has performed extremely well for a first-of-its-kind build.” Once in service, the new electric ferry will be used on the Downtown to Half Moon Bay route, (with charger infrastructure installed at the Half Moon Bay Ferry Terminal). At just over 25m in overall length and with a beam of 8.5m, it has capacity for three crew and up to 200 passengers and boasts a modern functional layout that includes sheltered bicycle and scooter storage inside the main cabin.
