McMullen & Wing has worked in close collaboration with designer EV Maritime, electrical engineers and electrical installers on this ground-breaking vessel. The ferry’s light, carbon fibre hull has allowed for integration of an electric propulsion system, large battery banks and rapid charging technology. The 10-tonne Freudenberg batteries have over 1.1MWh of battery electric energy storage capacity. “These systems add complexity but also bring exciting new opportunities for innovation,” observes Craig, noting that project partner EV Maritime is currently working on designing other vessels for international clients too. This is the first of two fully electric ferries for Auckland Transport, which is transitioning away from diesel-powered ferries in favour of a modern, decarbonised fleet of electric and electric-hybrid ferries. Currently, Auckland’s ferries burn up 13 million litres of diesel per year, generating the equivalent of 34,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide tailpipe emissions. The switch away from diesel paves the way to big emissions reductions in future, in line with Auckland Transport’s mission to create a cleaner, quieter and more comfortable transport future. At the time of writing, construction of their second electric ferry was already well advanced at McMullen & Wing’s Mt Wellington facility ahead of its planned launch this year. “Lessons from the first build have allowed us to improve efficiency while maintaining the same high standards.” Located on the Tāmaki River, with direct access to the Waitematā Harbour, McMullen & Wing is well-known for boat building excellence. Their skilled team brings over 50 years of experience to new build projects and servicing of commercial craft. Their team is now super-excited to be at the forefront of decarbonisation on the water. McMullen & Wing first became involved with this project in 2018, well before physical construction started. Craig says the construction process itself went smoothly, given that this is the first vessel of its kind from their yard. “We are extremely proud of our part in this. These ferries represent a major step towards modernising Auckland’s public transport network and set a benchmark internationally for fast, zero-emission ferries. Being part of that transition is hugely rewarding for everyone at McMullen & Wing.” Projects of this size and complexity are well within McMullen & Wing’s capabilities. Their team regularly delivers a wide range of commercial and custom vessels, along with refits and servicing projects for a variety of clients. One of their other new construction projects, just getting underway, is of an aluminium Barnett offshore-designed vessel. McMullen & Wing’s facilities include four separate construction buildings, full engineering and joinery workshops, design office and administration block along with a 300 tonne concrete slipway, slipway trolleys, an onsite travel lift and deep water work berths. With the experience gained building these first two electric ferries, McMullen & Wing is well-positioned for future ferry builds. “These vessels put New Zealand at the forefront of electric ferry technology worldwide, and our team is honoured to help lead that.” YOUR ONE STOP PAINT SHOP. 90 Wairau Road Glenfield T 443 3430 wpcpaints.co.nz Proud to supply Hempel’s Silicone Foul Release for AT’s electric ferries by McMullen & Wing.
