That’s what drives every project we take on.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Specialist medical facility design and fitout company Focusplan has recently completed Auckland Radiation Oncology’s (ARO) new North Shore clinic, a state-of-theart cancer treatment facility that combines advanced technology with patient-centred design. For ARO, the project represents its second world-class clinic, expanding access to world class cancer care for patients living on the North Shore and surrounding regions. For Focusplan, it reflects fifteen years of experience in healthcare interiors and a trusted partnership with ARO built over multiple successful projects. “Having already delivered successful projects at the ARO Epsom site, including the first Cyberknife Bunker in New Zealand, ARO had confidence in us to deliver this purpose-built facility end to end,” says Manley Herd, Pre-Construction Manager at Focusplan. “The finished clinic features a spacious reception and waiting area, five consulting rooms, a procedure room, changing bays and clean and dirty rooms.” The bunker, softened by timber panelling, accent lighting, and large light boxes, creates a plentiful natural light effect. Subtle audio features and calming imagery reduce anxiety for patients undergoing treatment. To the entrance of the bunker and control room, there is a large operable skylight. This skylight creates a natural light feature for patients and staff, and doubles as a delivery pathway for large radiation oncology machines. Focusplan was responsible for every stage of the fitout from concept to completion, collaborating with external project managers RCP, Argon Constructors, Structus, Mesh Consulting and Maken Design. The project, completed in 14 months and delivered in June this year, consisted of the end-to-end planning, design, and construction of both the bunker and the refurbishment of the existing site. Constructing radiation bunkers brought unique challenges, such as the requirement for 1500 cubic metres of in situ concrete for radiation shielding. It also demanded intricate coordination to integrate specialist equipment. Despite the complexities, the project was delivered on time and on budget. “The delivery timeline was condensed, but we achieved it without compromise,” says Manley. “We exist to enable healthcare professionals to deliver the best possible care.
