Lehmann Building BUILDING Nine years ago, Dean and Sharnn Lehmann founded Lehmann Building Limited, and the two are balancing busy rural and residential projects with raising their three children – Lewis 10, Theo 7, and Liana 4. In 2021, they were faced with the unexpected loss of Dean’s dad. In 2022, they broke ground on their forever home after a year of meticulous design. Their vision was a house spacious enough to grow their family built on the farm where the Lehmanns have lived for four generations. “Kevin had always dreamed of building a destination restaurant on the hill so people could come and enjoy the breathtaking view. We knew this land was the perfect place, not only to honour his memory but also to fulfil a piece of that dream,” explains Sharnn. Together, Dean and Sharnn designed their 440sqm home to capture 360-degree views of the surrounding Morrinsville countryside. Every room offers a glimpse of the sweeping views, bringing a sense of openness and calm to their busy family life. “We wanted the home to blend seamlessly with the natural beauty of the land, creating a timeless country aesthetic,” says Sharnn. The exterior combines handcrafted bricks from Thorn in the Netherlands, and warm cedar cladding. This detail continues inside with cedar on one side of the entrance and brick on the other, drawing the eye through to a feature garden dedicated to Kevin. Sheltered behind glass, it’s the heart of the home – a statement symbolising family, memory, and legacy. To the left of the entrance lies the kids’ wing, with a bedroom and bathroom for each of them. To the right, an open-plan living and kitchen space leads to the main bedroom. Throughout, natural light pours in from five strategically placed skylights, while outside a saltwater pool and outdoor fire extend family living on to a kwila deck designed to capture the spectacular vista. Every detail was carefully considered, and that care was recognised when the home won Gold at the Master Builders House of the Year Awards scoring highly in workmanship, sustainability, and design.
