BUILDING Crafted Building Co Perched high above Palm Beach on Waiheke Island is a dream home that from the road appears as a quiet composition of breeze block walls and black aluminium, but step inside and it’s an architectural masterpiece that has featured on Grand Designs New Zealand. The four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home across three levels features vast spaces, soaring timber lattice ceiling and sensational views over the bay. This multi-million-dollar Grand Designs project became the job that launched a company for Alex Toye and Bec Callaghan of Crafted Building Co on Waiheke Island. When Dale and Maria Gray set out to create their dream home, they couldn’t predict the extraordinary challenges the project would pose, including dramatic budget blowouts and the complex engineering feats that were required across the steeply pitched site plunging into bushland. Despite the complexity, Alex’s personal commitment was unwavering. “I took over the project when Dale and Maria asked if I could continue on and finish it,” he says. “When the going got tough, I had their best interests at heart and was committed to seeing it through. Being a staged consent with details constantly evolving, budget blowouts were highly likely, as was the case with this project. The complexity was next level and was worth getting it right.” Architecturally designed by Dylan Rhynd of DPRD Studio, the Grays’ home defies traditional form by being a bold, multi-level structure with barely a right angle in sight. A striking timber lattice ceiling crowns the top floor, where the kitchen, dining, and lounge areas open to a sprawling deck. A pool and spa deck extends out from the second level, while a compact indoor garden brings light to the lower floor. The top floor also features an outdoor hydraulic turntable and car stacker that elevates the car to a raised garage ceiling for optimal use of space. “The home is 13 and a half metres tall on a 30-degree slope,” says Alex. “ We poured more than 300 cubic metres of concrete, plus 50 concrete pillars and 4.5-metre-high retaining walls and extensive steel fabrication before the house even began to rise.” The ground floor contains 45,000 litres of water storage, a covered deck area housing pump stations for swimming pools, and control rooms for central and underfloor heating systems. An EOS heat-exchange unit removes stale air and re-circulates warmer, drier, fresher air throughout the home. For Crafted Building Co, completing the Grand Designs project encapsulated everything the business stands for: honesty, integrity, reliability, and craftsmanship built to last. “Our mantra is we are open and honest and highly transparent,” says Alex. “We remain friends with our clients at the end of each build. That’s what we strive for.” Alex has 20 years’ building experience and leads a fully licensed and certified building team, some of whom have worked alongside Alex for a decade. For Alex and Bec, the Grand Designs home on Waiheke will always be the catalyst for Crafted Building Co.’s journey and a crowning achievement – one only recently matched by the arrival of their baby daughter Anderson.
