14 | DC Group: Port Nikau � Virginia Wright New era for Whangārei’s former port Port Nikau’s deep-water marina is the centrepiece of the Marine Precinct. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT It’s been 15 years in the planning, and with the first residential sections coming on the market this Christmas it’s clear that Whangārei’s Port Nikau development has been carefully thought through every step of the way. It follows international best practice for urban design planning, taking inspiration from port and waterfront developments around the world, adapted to local conditions to make the most of what the 100 hectares of user-friendly land has to offer, enabling each of the three divisions to successfully feed into the others: the commercial build-and-lease precinct, the marina precinct with boat-building and maintenance capability, and the soon to be released residential precinct. First to get underway was the Logyard Road commercial precinct. When the two families behind the development, the Davies-Colleys and the Heatleys, bought Whangārei’s former port site and other adjoining titles, they knew the established commercial tenancies that came with it would help sustain the development as it progressed: cool store, dry store, fertiliser storage, and not least, the Tenex Building, which had housed the Penix Facility, purpose-built to build frigates for the New Zealand Navy, and easily adapted to be the significant boatyard with a trail lift that it now is. The commercial precinct continues to expand, with three new builds currently underway, and plenty of room for people looking for a build-to-lease option in a thriving commercial environment.
