Founded by Lawrence T McGuinness, the Wellington-based construction company has grown from humble beginnings to become one of New Zealand’s largest privately owned construction firms, employing approximately 450 permanent staff across its commercial buildings, interiors, heritage, multi-unit residential and facilities and maintenance divisions, says LT McGuinness project manager James Haworth. This commitment to tradition, coupled with innovation, is perhaps best exemplified by the company’s approach to staff development. It maintains a traditional building company model with its own carpenters, apprentices, labourers and crane crews, and leaders have generally come up through the company, developing a deep understanding of LT McGuinness’s unique culture. Central to the company’s modern identity is its low carbon mission, positioning it as one of New Zealand’s first net carbon-zero certified building contractors. “The built environment contributes up to 15% of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions and up to 50% of waste to landfill,” explains James. “We want to lead the way in reducing those numbers to zero.” he mission operates on three pillars: reducing the company’s carbon footprint to zero, building with lower embodied carbon and less waste, and partnering with clients towards a low-carbon future. Through its partnership with Toitü, it measures emissions annually, and has committed to offsetting remaining emissions from 2022. Innovation extends beyond environmental considerations to include pioneering partnerships, such as its work with Neocrete, a company producing sustainable concrete additives. “The increased strength means that less cement can be used, which can reduce the embodied carbon by 20 to 40% compared to standard concrete,” explains James. Family values at the core LT McGuinness prides itself on being the market leader in early contractor involvement (ECI) processes, with its comprehensive history making it the preferred contractor choice for many clients. “Many of our most successful projects have had considerable ECI input,” says James. “We play a key part in the pre-construction phase, adding value by being innovative, doing our homework, and being a strong voice at the table.” Central to the company’s modern identity is its low carbon mission, positioning it as one of New Zealand’s first net carbon-zero certified building contractors.
