CONTRACTING Mike Stent Decorators Family owned and operated for more than 25 years, Mike Stent Decorators is a trusted name across the Waikato, known for personable service and commitment to excellence across every project that transforms a house into a home. Founded by Mike Stent and now led day‑to‑day by his son, Matt Stent, the Hamilton‑based company are registered Master Painters, Site-Safe accredited and previous Master Painters award winners. “We’re not just painting walls, we’re creating homes,” says Matt. “Whether it’s a family’s first home, a nursery for a newborn, or large-scale group home decorating, we take pride in every project.” The company’s expertise in group-housing developments over the years has made it a go‑to choice for large‑scale projects, including private developments and state housing. In 2022, Mike Stent Decorators was named New Zealand Master Painters Group Housing Contractor of the Year, highlighting their ability to deliver consistent quality at scale. But the company isn’t just about volume. “We are always looking for new opportunities in painting new builds. There is sometimes a perception that we only do group housing,” Matt says. “Although it’s still a core capability and service we offer, we are equally skilled at smaller- scale residential repaint and renovation projects.” Leaning into its versatility, Mike Stent Decorators focus includes private residential renovations, extensions and repaints. “No job is too big or too small. At the end of the day, it’s mine and Dad’s name on every project,” Matt says. “That’s why we make sure the quality is something we’re proud of, and something our clients can be proud of too.” The team today includes 10 skilled painters – the majority qualified and experienced tradespeople, plus apprentices learning the craft. “My lifelong friend Rhyan Parkes serves as my head foreman, and Mike’s nephew Josh Ruff, is another lead foreman and has been with us for 15 years. “Then there is Nathan Crawford, who was the company’s first apprentice, who has also grown into a leadership role. We’re a business with strong family values and sense of community.” Two recent projects stand out as examples of the company’s calibre. In Cambridge, the team has ongoing work within Te Awa Lifecare Village, a retirement community with hospital units and villas where the level of finish has won Mike Stent Decorators national award recognition over the past eight years. Another notable ongoing project the company is involved with is the Tunawhakepeke housing development in Rototuna. “We’re about to come to the end of stage 2 of this development, which is a series of two-level townhouses designed with families in mind. “Very well-considered, high-quality homes that showcase both scale and sophistication.” The company’s sense of community responsibility runs deep, evidenced by their partnering with Resene in 2021 to paint the Epilepsy New Zealand Foundation premises purple, donating their labour free of charge. “We’re lucky to work in our communities.
