MARINE K2 Marine T T Emma Bailey The Kiwi boating dream remains strong, even through recent slowdowns, according to Amos Kay, founder of luxury boat builder K2 Marine. “The passion for life on the water has not faded – it is just waiting for the right moment to resurface,” Amos says. t the heart of K2 Marine’s fleet is their flagship, the Wright 52 Powercat. Designed by iconic New Zealand naval architect Alan Wright, this luxury catamaran offers exceptional performance and comfort, and is priced around the $2 million mark. However, it is the boat’s unparalleled customisation that truly sets it apart. “Boats are deeply personal, just like homes,” Amos says. “Our clients want a boat that is tailored exactly to their lifestyle, usage and personal style. We go to great lengths to accommodate that.” Even seemingly simple modifications can have extensive implications. “Changing a layout on one deck, impacts others significantly. Unlike houses, boat decks are not independent floors, they are interconnected. It demands creative thinking and innovative engineering.” K2 Marine thrives under the family leadership of father and son Kelvin and Amos Kay. Kelvin, an accomplished powerboat racer with extensive manufacturing expertise, provides hands-on skill, while Amos contributes a love for technology and innovation developed during his civil engineering studies. “Building boats of this calibre typically requires substantial backing,” Amos says. “But we have made it work through strong industry relationships and the classic Kiwi can-do spirit.” K2 Marine emphasises local craftsmanship, sourcing predominantly from New Zealand suppliers and specialist subcontractors, resulting in a quality that stands apart from mass-production competitors. he company recently took its innovative approach to Australia’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, showcasing the Wright 52 Sedan. Demonstrating its blue-water capabilities, the vessel made the journey from New Zealand to the Gold Coast via Fiji, impressing visitors with both its practicality and elegance. “We received an incredible reception,” says Amos. “Australians value practicality, often reflected in their functional designs. We addressed those practical needs, but elevated the style and finish.” A prime example of this approach is the Wright 52’s expansive 25-plus-sqm cockpit, a versatile space suitable for entertaining, serious fishing, leisure or storage during longrange voyages. Looking ahead, K2 Marine has ambitious new projects. Their Aqua Home range is designed to revolutionise houseboats on New Zealand’s picturesque waterways. Built on the proven Powercat hulls, these luxurious floating homes combine robustness with the elegance of modern residences. “We are passionate about these houseboats and are seeking visionary clients to bring this concept to life – perhaps someone looking for a unique holiday retreat complete with spa, sauna or even a helicopter pad,” Amos says. Additionally, the team is developing a game-fishing trailer launch, crafted for serious anglers. “This is not your typical upsized fizz boat,” says Amos. “It’s designed from scratch to provide largelaunch capabilities in a trailerable size, with a remarkable 750-plus nautical mile range without extra fuel storage.” For K2 Marine, innovation and craftsmanship define their course – keeping New Zealand’s boating dreams alive and thriving.
