T T Sue Russell “Many projects require elements of both disciplines, and by managing them under one umbrella, we can improve coordination, streamline delivery and reduce the number of contractors our clients need to manage.” Founded in 2007, Whangārei-based BDX Group has grown into a multidisciplinary engineering and civil construction company, delivering projects throughout Northland and beyond. The company provides structural steel fabrication, industrial maintenance, engineering services to the oil and gas sector, and a broad range of civil construction services for private clients and local government. According to Managing Director Hamish Wood, the combination of engineering and civil construction capabilities under one roof is a key point of difference for the business. “Having both engineering and civil expertise within the same organisation allows us to provide a more integrated solution for our clients,” says Hamish. “Many projects require elements of both disciplines, and by managing them under one umbrella, we can improve coordination, streamline delivery and reduce the number of contractors our clients need to manage.” Hamish says this approach not only improves efficiency but also helps reduce project risk by creating clearer lines of communication and accountability throughout the delivery process. “Whether it’s infrastructure, industrial facilities or commercial projects, having our engineering and civil teams working together means decisions can be made faster, interfaces are better managed, and our clients have a single point of responsibility. That ultimately leads to better project outcomes.” This year, the capabilities of BDX Group were recognised by the sector in receiving two prestigious awards at the Northland CCNZ Awards held on Friday 12 June at Whangarei’s Northland Events Centre. The awards related to work on the company’s Springs Flat enabling work, part of construction of a large four-exit new roundabout on SH1, Kamo, just north of the city. The project involved substantial earthworks, drainage and utility preparations for the site, the construction of road extensions and an attenuation pond to support eventual commercial development. Chartered Professional Engineer and Project Manager Scott Davies-Colley was part of a team of 10 from BDX Group who worked on the large roading development. “We undertook Stage 1 enabling works which included bulk earthworks, drainage and environmental work up to pavement level. Fulton Hogan then took over the building of the roundabout pavement as the Stage 2 contractor,” Scott said. While acknowledging the project had some complex aspects to it and encountered the challenges of working through the winter months, Scott says it proceeded well. The Hoskin Environmental Award and the Simpson Shaw Innovation Awards were presented to BDX in recognition of their planning and realignment of a stream that was diverted as part of the project. Given its sensitive nature, great care was taken in the treatment of silted water and in the identification and relocation of several important animal species, including eels, bullies, kōura and 524 Amarinus Lacustric native freshwater crabs. Scott says NZ Environmental had undertaken a scoping study where native species were identified in the stream requiring to be diverted within the construction area. “It added another layer or two of complexity to our work for sure but there were great outcomes. “We also had to relocate native lizards, that were located in the area and shifted these to the Parihaka Reserve. Special barriers were set up during the course of the stream’s diversion to isolate the site and allow relocation within the construction area with NZ Environmental and local iwi. “The time we spent in planning how we would recover these animals was wellspent and the capture and relocation went smoothly.” Scott says Springs Flat project epitomised what is possible when everyone is committed to ensuring the best possible environmental and species outcomes and to receive the awards on the night was a highlight for the team who had worked diligently over the eight-month project.
