T T Nick Walker If we can identify delivery risks while a project is being priced, we can often avoid delays, rework, variations and unnecessary costs. That’s where we create the most value for clients.” Price matters in today’s construction market. But for Arcwell Engineering, the big question isn’t who can supply the cheapest steel - it’s who can deliver the project with the fewest surprises. General manager Andre Garton says that’s where many projects are won or lost. “Anyone can price a beam,” he says. “The real challenge is making sure it can be detailed, fabricated, coated, transported, lifted and installed efficiently before it reaches the project site.” While the market often rewards the lowest upfront price, Arcwell takes a different approach. Rather than simply pricing what’s on the drawings, the team works backwards from installation, reviewing the practical realities of procurement, coating, transport and erection while projects are being priced. “We begin with the end in mind,” Garton says. “We think about how every piece of steel is going to make its way from our workshop into the finished building. If we can identify delivery risks while a project is being priced, we can often avoid delays, rework, variations and unnecessary costs. That’s where we create the most value for clients.” That delivery-first mindset has made Arcwell a trusted partner across Auckland and Northland, supporting projects from commercial buildings, warehouses and apartments to aged care facilities, luxury homes and major energy infrastructure. Established in 2003, the company employs around 25 people across workshops in Whangārei and Auckland. While structural steel fabrication is central to the business, Andre believes Arcwell’s strength is identifying delivery risks early and helping project teams resolve them before construction begins. “Our expertise means we can take an architect’s vision and turn it into reality, while identifying constructability, access and installation challenges early enough to address them, without compromising the original design intent.” That means looking beyond the drawings to understand how components will interact with other trades, whether coating specifications are practical, how oversized members will be transported, what procurement risks exist, and whether installation can be completed safely and efficiently under real site conditions. “It’s much easier - and much cheaper - to solve a problem on paper than it is once everyone’s on site,” Garton says. Recent projects demonstrate the breadth of that approach. The company is supplying structural steel for Meridian Energy’s Ruakākā Energy Park, including platforms supporting electrical substations for the new solar farm. It’s also contributing to seismic upgrades and new steel infrastructure at Northland’s Wairua Hydroelectric Power Station, while later this year it will help reroof Semenoff Stadium in Whangārei. Andre says repeat business is one of the strongest indicators that clients recognise the value of planning for delivery rather than simply comparing fabrication prices. “We’ve had customers choose someone else because they had a lower price, then come back to us for the next project. “They found the cheapest steel package doesn’t always produce the cheapest project outcome. The difference in upfront cost is often outweighed by the savings that come from avoiding delays, rework and delivery issues later in the project.” For Arcwell, that’s what value looks like. “It’s not just about supplying steel. It’s about helping clients deliver their projects with greater certainty.”
