Everybody delivered on that project to the high standard we’re always looking to achieve, and it was open and honest all the way through. It’s difficult when you’re building with just timber because it moves and the attention to detail was across everything from the kitchen joinery to the detailed tiling and the plasterwork.” Pip’s influence is everywhere, from the positioning on the site to conserve the landscape and nestle into the dunes, to the asymmetrical roof form that fans out towards the east to produce a covered courtyard without increasing the footprint. “We kept it taut and tight in terms of circulation and functionality and people who’ve visited there just love it,” says Calum. So too did the judges of the 2026 New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) Auckland Architecture Awards where the Te Arai North Clubhouse won a hospitality category honor, adding another award-winning building to Pip Cheshire’s impressive legacy.
