Cheshire Architects was founded in Auckland by Pip Cheshire and his son Nat as a specialised boutique architectural practice in 2004. It’s grown over the years to a team of around 40, and today Cheshire Architects’ design and planning influence can be felt throughout Auckland and beyond. They helped lead the multi-year transformation of Auckland’s downtown waterfront area into the contemporary hub of shops, eateries and public spaces that is the Britomart Precinct including designing its namesake hotel. Britomart Hotel was the first hotel in the country to receive a 5 Green Star Custom Built rating for its eco-friendly design and construction practices. Master planning and development, culture and heritage, hospitality and retail, residential, workplace, lighting and individually bespoke furniture, Cheshire excels at it all and all with the same ethos that has guided them from the beginning. They work with the human experience of place whether it’s a precinct, a cabin or a clubhouse. Their designs are achieved through intense collaboration with their clients rather than the imposition of their architectural ideas. They don’t have a signature look but treat every project as a fresh concept based on the client’s needs. Calum McNaught came to architecture from a graphic design background and has been with Cheshire since the early days of his career change in 2007. He feels fortunate to have had Pip as his mentor at a time when the firm was a lot younger and smaller. “He was such a great orator and essentially a master of his craft so having that in the early stages of my career was a really stable architectural education.” Cheshire fosters strong relationships and several staff have been there as long or longer than Calum. “Pip had a famous line of always employing people who were better than himself, that was his approach to things. I don’t know that I necessarily believed that; Pip was a master in his own right, but that always made you feel good, that you were wanted, and a useful participant in his projects.” One such project was the Te Arai Clubhouse built to serve the Te Arai Links North Golfcourse. Calum and Pip worked on it together over 3 years, together with a small team from the office, although Calum refers to it as a Pip Cheshire building. Pip lived long enough to see it entered into the NZIA Regional awards, but not the winning of its first award, testament to his enduring ability to design buildings inherently suited to the use for which they’re destined. “That was where Pip excelled. He could take a brief and produce a completely better outcome not just for the client but for the people who occupy the buildings, and he was extremely conscious of delivering 110% whether it was across the financial viability of a project or the social offerings that it has outside the financing side, and I think the Clubhouse is a great example of that,” says Calum. It began with Cheshire Architects assisting with the masterplanning of the development associated with the Northern Golfcourse. The initial proposal was for several 4-bedroom villas, a concierge building, a clubhouse, services and so on. As the brief morphed and changed Cheshire focused specifically on the clubhouse which became the jewel in the crown of that development. The concierge building was folded into the clubhouse building and the design became more refined as it changed.
