Community projects are becoming an increasingly prominent part of Pukekohe Builders’ workload, with the long-established Franklin construction company now underway on a new purpose-built op-shop and community facility for St Andrews Parish in Waiuku. Located alongside the existing St Andrews Church on Queen Street, the project will replace the existing op-shop building with a significantly improved facility designed to better support the church and its wider community activities. Pukekohe Builders contracts manager Ben Collett says the development will include a dedicated retail area, a large crafts and workshop space, office facilities, storage and new accessible toilet facilities. The new building will also connect directly into the existing church, creating a much stronger relationship between the two spaces. The building itself combines practical commercial construction with architectural elements designed to complement the existing church. This creates a modern and durable facility that still sits comfortably within the wider site. For Pukekohe Builders, a key aspect of the project has been working with Hurley Architects to achieve a buildable solution around the church’s available budget. This build is also a continuation of a longstanding relationship between Pukekohe Builders and St Andrews Church, having previously completed an extension to the church and undertaken maintenance and upgrade work at the property over a number of years. That relationship-based approach is becoming increasingly important to Pukekohe Builders as it takes on more projects for community organisations. A recent example is the new Kariaotahi Surf Life Saving Club facility, where Pukekohe Builders was involved through an Early Contractor Involvement process to deliver a design build solution within the club’s available budget. The completed project went on to receive both a Gold Award and a Special Award at the Registered Master Builders Commercial Project Awards — recognition Ben says reflects the collaborative approach taken by the client, consultants, contractors, and wider project team. That experience is now carrying through to another significant local project, with Pukekohe Builders working alongside Hurley Architects on a new respite centre for Franklin Hospice in Pukekohe. Again, the emphasis is on working with the client and design team to develop a solution that responds to the organisation’s needs, while remaining realistic about funding and construction costs. Delivering more of these projects close to home also makes sense for Pukekohe Builders. Keeping its teams working within Franklin reduces travel and allows the company to utilise its local workforce and established subcontractor relationships. All while contributing to facilities that its own staff, families, and communities will ultimately use. It is an approach that fits naturally with a business that has been part of Pukekohe since 1969. Founder Hank Lieshout established the company with a strong emphasis on apprenticeships and developing tradespeople. This philosophy has continued through successive generations and is now being carried forward under the third-generation leadership of Nikita Lieshout. Pukekohe Builders currently has six apprentices in training, and Ben himself started with the company as an apprentice before progressing to contracts manager. Current construction manager Mikhail Marthe also completing his apprenticeship with Pukekohe Builders and progressed through site management roles, including leading the award-winning Kariaotahi Surf Life Saving Club development. That commitment to developing people continues, with recently qualified carpenter Jayden Buckingham winning the 2025 Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year — Auckland Region, highlighting the strength of the company’s ongoing investment in training and apprenticeships.
