22 | Southland stud moving into fourth generation Waimara Angus was started by Tom and Sally Law in 1988 on a small property in Te Anau. Rosa Watson Running its stud through a commercial herd has been a useful tool in measuring its performance for Southland-based Waimara Angus. The family-owned stud is based at Wainuka Run in Eastern Bush on 825ha property run by Kate and Chris Pont with 180 to 200 stud cows, as well as 4500 commercial ewes. The couple recently started a new partnership with Kate’s brother Andrew Law and wife Jayne who manage North Range Partnership farm near Lumsden. Andrew has started a satellite stud herd for Waimara at the property, where the annual sale takes place on June 4. The recent move to bring the sale to North Range from Wainuka Run, and timing it to coincide with other sales in the area, gives them closer proximity to buyers, Andrew says. “We had it last year and we had a lot of people turn up for a look. Hopefully that will carry on into buyers eventually.” The bulls are looking good this year, and he hopes to have 30 to 35 available at the sale and going forward hoping to offer more yearlings for sale by private treaty The stud cows are put with the commercial cows at North Range, which Andrew says gives them the confidence that they are performing in real systems, and all cows at both North Range and Wainuka are run behind the sheep. “We’re trying a few new genetics in our North Range cows just to see that they work well for us before introducing them into the main herd, and have also started a significant embryo transfer program. “It’s pretty good for us to know they’re tested in a proper commercial environment and also having real commercial results to back up the stud.” While a new generation has taken over the stud, the focus remains on good structure and consistency, and the maternal cow Andrew says. MEAT & WOOL » North Range Partnership “We’ve always just been really strongly focussed on breeding cows that do their job, and we’ve probably stuck to our guns and not followed the fads. We’re really big on good udders and feet. “We’re focussed on making good cows, and the bulls are a by-product of that.” Clear Drain South Phone Hamish Montgomery (Monty) 021 564638 • Email: cleardrainsouth@gmail.com DRAIN AND CULVERT CLEARING • SMALL DIGGER JOBS • AUGER WORK • WATERBLASTING
