Andrew has been managing at North Range for 14 years where he runs 550 commercial cows and 10,000 sheep over 2500ha, and another 320 cows and 1700 ewes at a store property in the headwaters of the Aparima River. He buys Waimara bulls to use in the commercial herd every year, and is now also using yearlings bred at North Range. In the future, most sale bulls will already have been used as yearlings. “It’s given us the opportunity to keep our base stud herd and introduce new genetics with a lot less risk,” Andrew says. Waimara Angus was started by Tom and Sally Law in 1988 on a small property in Te Anau with four cows from Sally’s father - Monty Ericson’s Matanaka - and four from Cottesbrook. Monty had an Angus stud and was at one time president of Angus NZ. When Tom and Sally had the opportunity to lease a property, they wasted no time starting their own stud. “Mum and dad started it with absolutely nothing and climbed their way up, which is pretty cool,” Andrew says. In 2006 the stud was moved to a new lease at Tumai – a 560ha coastal property in East Otago - and in 2011 Waimara purchased 50 cows from Braxton Angus Stud. In 2017 Tom and Sally had the opportunity to purchase their own 600ha run block at Middlemarch on the Rock and Pillar, and in 2022 they sold up and the stud moved to Wainuka Run. Today, the stud consists of almost 250 in-calf cows, and 20 to 30 embryo recipients. Over 35 years of breeding Waimara cows have proven to thrive in the long dry summers of East Otago, the tops of the Rock and Pillar Range in Middlemarch to the cold harsh winters of Southland. With the next generation keen to continue breeding Angus, the legacy started by Tom and Sally looks set to continue.
