RURAL PEOPLE » McFadzean Cattle Co performance results. “It’s quite tough out there too at times being an East Coast farm,” says Johnie. “They are a popular breed at our sale. We are our biggest client and in our commercial business. We calve 2100 cattle including 500 plus heifers a year and a lot are calved on the hill on their own without too much checking. That’s our point of difference - our genetics are proven commercially.” For the McFadzeans, the key to success lies in continual improvement. “We don’t sit on our laurels. This year I bought six new sires to go into the system. We are forever looking to improve genetics to keep ourselves at the top end of the genetic pool. It’s a great game to go around the bull sales and try and find the best ones,” says Johnie. Laura undertakes the administration side of the business. Johnie and Laura’s four sons - Jack, 12, Harry, 10, Angus, 8 and George, 7 - have grown up on the farm and enjoy helping out. Cattle from all three signature breeds will be available for inspection at Glenbrae Station, with a brochure accessible on the McFadzean Cattle Co website. Johnie says he carries around 150 bulls through the winter to get the 85 that will be put up for sale.
