| 77 Karen Phelps ON FARM » Rimu Partnership Second on farm bull sale coming up Cows and calves. Rimu Charolais in Taumarunui is building on the success of its inaugural on farm bull sale last year with its second scheduled for Thursday 21 May, 2026. Stud owner Don Dittmer says the inaugural sale proved a standout success with all 15 bulls sold and an average price of $11,467. “Even with generally high prices last year, this is a massive achievement and real credit to Rimu Charolais’ reputation in the industry. The bulls looked fantastic and I think the buyers found confidence in that,” he says. Don says the strong clearance in 2025 reflected the stud’s long-term investment in elite genetics. Rimu Charolais is heavily influenced by Silverstream bloodlines, with the majority of bull dams being daughters of Silverstream Holster, a sire that has had a lasting impact both in New Zealand and Australia. The sale offering was dominated by sons of Silverstream Oatley, a bull that continues to leave a powerful legacy. Oatley remains working at Rimu Charolais and was used again this season, underlining the stud’s confidence in his consistency and performance. “He has bred on tremendously well; he is a very reliable sire selling over $1 million of progeny,” explains Don. The first Rimu Charolais-born Silverstream Sonic sons will be an exciting feature of this year’s sale. Silverstream Sonic, owned by Silverstream Charolais, is a homozygous polled sire for which Rimu Charolais holds breeding rights. Known for calving ease and lower birth weight, Sonic has been widely used across both dairy and beef systems. “He has been very successful in the dairy and beef industries, and his sons and daughters have been in hot demand in previous Silverstream sales,” says Don. Silverstream Sterling also features prominently. Purchased as the top lot at the 2023 Silverstream sale, Sterling is a homozygous polled Silverstream Padra son from the highly regarded Charlotte cow family. “He ticks a lot of boxes for Rimu Charolais - homozygous polled, lower birth weight, high growth and a very functional sire,” explains Don. Don is also enthusiastic about Silverstream TransTasman, the top-priced bull at the 2024 Silverstream sale. He was a stand-out bull with great shape, temperament and real power. The calves show excellent growth, capacity and shape - one to watch for the future,” says Don. At the heart of Rimu Charolais’ programme is a clear breeding philosophy focused on the commercial farmer. Don says the aim is to produce low-maintenance, functional bulls that go out and work, leaving polled, docile and high-performance progeny. He places strong emphasis on customer satisfaction and long-term relationships saying that Rimu Charolais wants to deliver a product buyers can rely on year after year. Like last year, the 2026 sale will be held through a new purpose-built on-farm facility, with bulls penned on concrete for inspection, giving buyers the opportunity to closely assess structure, soundness and temperament before bidding. All yearling bulls in the sale have been used over the Angus herd. Don aims to present around 25 lots. There will be a viewing day on Tuesday 12 May. BIDR will again be available to support off-farm buyers. 40 r2 Simmental Bulls | Our bulls are guaranteed for structural soundness DNA tested | Fertility tested | Muscle scanned | Beef classed | EBL & BVD negative Bull Sale - 13th May, 11:30am Kaikohe Saleyards Contact Aaron Gubb: 021 590 915
