Owned and operated by Doug Wilson, the business has been built around a simple philosophy: delivering what’s needed, when it’s needed - no matter the day or time. “Farmers don’t tend to give you much notice when they need something,” Doug says. “They might call on a Sunday needing lime or palm kernel the next morning. That’s just the way it is on farms, and we’re ready for it.” Doug launched Northern Rural Haulage in 2009 after decades in the transport industry, including livestock cartage and bulk material delivery. With farming in his blood and wheels under his feet, Doug runs a few units of dry stock on his own 100-acre block, and comes from a long line of truck drivers including his father and brother Don, who still works in livestock transport out of Pukekohe with his business OnRoad Transport. These days, Doug, his son and dispatch manager Kyle, and Northern Rural Haulage’s hardworking team of 18 run a reliable fleet of trucks servicing Northland and beyond, including the Waikato and Tauranga regions. Their core work - an estimated 80% - is rural, hauling everything from fertiliser and feed to hay, sileage, race metal, and farm machinery. The rest is bulk cartage of building materials like sand and metal to construction sites across the region. “We’ve always been a rural-first business,” Doug says. “That means no set contracts so we’re available when the farmers need us. We make sure we’ve got the gear ready to meet daily demand.” Northern Rural Haulage’s fleet includes truck and trailer bulk units, 6-wheeler tippers, a 5-tonne tipper, and a transporter for shifting farm machinery along with bagged fertiliser and bagged calf feed. All trucks are maintained to a high standard at the company’s onsite workshop, with major repairs handled by local specialists to keep everything roadworthy and compliant. Customer service is what sets the business apart.
