| 71 Breakthrough in reducing nitrates Respected publication APAC Business Standard has recognised Magnify NZ as “the most advanced fertiliser solution provider driving sustainability in 2025” for breakthroughs in biofertiliser and biostimulants across the Asia Pacific region. Karen Phelps New Zealand agricultural biotechnology company Magnify NZ is achieving global recognition for developing a revolutionary biological solution that dramatically reduces nitrate pollution from dairy farms while boosting productivity. Magnify New Zealand has been featured by respected publication APAC Business Standard following ground breaking research demonstrating its bio-stimulant products can reduce nitrate leaching by an extraordinary 91%. “We recognised the potential to design approaches that align with nature instead of opposing it,” explains company founder Scott Hobson. “Our goal was to enhance both the financial returns and long-term sustainability for farmers while also tackling urgent issues like declining soil health, nutrient runoff and the effects of climate change.” The company’s products aim to restore soil balance as well as rewarding the farmer. Scott says the soil system is typically described in oversimplified terms and that field testing products is the only reliable way to know outcomes. “Since 2016 Magnify products have been growing over 1500 to 3000 kg DM/ha per application on average to good pastures. That’s growth equivalents of over 120 kg N/ha so reducing nitrogen inputs is easy when using Magnify. Independent trials conducted over 20 years validate the approach.” Scott says this biological approach recognises that plants naturally excrete up to 30% of their sugars to nourish microbial allies, an exchange that Magnify’s formulations supercharge through targeted microbial inoculation. Importantly the success of the company’s products directly impacts a farmer’s bottom line in a multitude of ways no matter whether they are dairy, sheep and beef or crop farmers. For example Scott says that dairy farmers using the products report healthier pastures with reduced fertiliser dependency and crop growers are replacing fungicides with biological alternatives and achieving higher yields with fewer disease problems. “The data trends in Canterbury groundwater indicate nitrate levels of over 40 mg/L N NO3/L had to be common over the last 20 years. Nitrogen fertilizer only accounted for approximately 10% of that. Urine was 90 % of the problem. Urine doesn’t automatically change because you reduce fertiliser nitrogen inputs.” He says that in most situations well nitrate concentrations will slowly increase to the concentrations in the leachate. “Delivering solutions to reward farmers and respect the future.” RURAL SERVICES » Magnify NZ Ltd Magnify’s breakthrough study revealed on a Canterbury dairy farm Magnify treatment almost eliminated the impact of the urine. Under Magnify treatment the nitrate levels were well below drinking water standards (DWS) while the control was - predictably - well above DWS. Perhaps more importantly under Magnify the pasture growth increased by 30% in spite of having less nitrogen applied to the Magnify treatment (40 kg N/ha less). Cow production increased and the empty rate halved. Scott says Magnify’s approach offers a stark contrast to failed chemical solutions like dicyandiamide (DCD), which trading partners rejected due to milk contamination concerns. “The biological products can be safely ingested and actually improve animal health while delivering comparable or superior environmental benefits,” explains Scott. “At Magnify our purpose is straightforward. To offer solutions that promote balance, reward the farmer and honour future generations. The tools exist. The science backs it. Contact Magnify NZ to see how we can help your farm benefit from the incredible tools we can offer.”
