After six years on the tools, Josh Weaver is putting his experience, qualifications, and client-first attitude to work with his own business JW Fencing, a one-man fencing operation with a growing reputation for high-quality rural fencing across Canterbury. Josh, who is located in the Selwyn district, took over an existing fencing division in September last year, rebranding it as JW Fencing and hitting the ground running. “It’s mainly rural fencing we’re doing, including post and rail, electric fencing, and even a few sheds,” he says. “I’ve got some loyal clients who came with the business, and I’m looking to build relationships with new ones too.” While fencing wasn’t always his first choice of work, it’s become a fulfilling and professional path. “I used to hate fencing! There were always more exciting jobs to do on a farm, and I used to drive tractors and diggers. But once I started fencing, I found real satisfaction in it. The first time I finished a fence and could stand back and say, ‘yeah, I built that,’ it’s a great feeling.” Josh also enjoys the client-facing side of the job just as much as being out on the tools. “Most people are easy-going and keen to listen. I always try to offer advice to help them get a better fence, but I’ve learned to time it right.” With a practical understanding of farm layouts and livestock behaviour from his time working on farms, Josh has developed an intuitive approach to building fences that are strong, stock-smart, and made to last. JW Fencing’s professional edge is backed by credentials. Josh holds an NZQA Level 4 Certificate in Fencing and the FCANZ Certified Fencer Endorsement, having jumped straight into the more advanced aspects of the trade, both technical and business-focused. “I’m not accredited yet because you need to have been in business for two years, but that’s the next step. There’s only a handful of certified fencers in Canterbury, so it’s a real point of difference.” While most of his work is currently in North Canterbury, Josh is mindful of the scale of the region and the logistics involved in growing. “It’s a big area and as we grow, I’m going to be RURAL SERVICES » JW Fencing managing my schedule smartly.
