Karen Phelps RURAL SERVICES » Northern Southland Vets Northern Southland Vets (NSVets) is marking its 60th anniversary this year. After starting with one vet in a garage in Riversdale the practice has now grown to offer a highly skilled team of 12 vets working across multiple locations in Northern Southland. “The anniversary shows our commitment to the farmers and community of Northern Southland. We have been here for 60 years and will continue to be here,” says Andrew Cochrane, veterinarian and shareholder of NSVets. Like many rural veterinary practices in New Zealand NSVets began in July 1965 as Waimea Plains Veterinary Club, where farmers banded together to bring a vet to their area to service their needs. The practice’s early expansion came swiftly. In 1966, just one year after establishment with vet Graham Shearman, Hamish Mavor joined as the second veterinarian. Mavor would become a defining figure in the practice’s development, serving as senior veterinarian and chief executive for nearly four decades until his death in 2007. Under his stewardship the club flourished and membership grew steadily. The 1970s marked a period of significant geographical expansion. As client demand increased the practice recognised the need for multiple service points. Land for the Te Anau clinic was purchased in 1971, extending services deeper into Fiordland farming communities. • Award winning Nithdale Genetics is among the best in New Zealand • A New Zealand leader in breeding dual purpose sheep resistant to internal parasites with high productive traits • Highly productive Suftex sheep bred for growth, meat yield, meat quality and survival • Nithdale Genetics offers both maternal and terminal sires to farmers New Zealand wide Ph. 027 418 3423 Russell White Always read and follow label instructions.
