Making this exciting new multi-million dollar theatre possible is a partnership between the Crown providing land in the precinct, the Council developing the precinct (including construction of The Court Theatre, public space and landscaping) and The Court Theatre, together with their supporters who have donated generously towards this project. After the February 2011 earthquakes, The Court Theatre had to leave their original home at the Arts Centre and make do with an old grain shed in Addington - a useful, but temporary, refuge while they planned a new permanent home. One of the world’s top theatre design specialists – London-based architectural practice Haworth Tompkins – was paired with Athfield Architects and a team of local consultants to design the new three-storey theatre, now fast taking shape on the corner of Colombo and Gloucester Streets. “We have been in conversation with Haworth Tompkins since 2014,” says The Court Theatre’s Artistic Advisor Ross Gumbley, whose career with the company spans nearly 40 years. “As we said to them, we stand on the shoulders of people that went before us to create the intimate experience we call The Court Theatre. That was our starting point – how do we make a theatre that’s intimate?” The detailed final design is perfectly aligned to serve The Court Theatre’s wide ranging repertoire of comedies, dramas and children’s shows through to large-scale musicals. Key elements include a 377-seat playhouse theatre (with main seating and two mezzanine levels, to be known as The Stewart Family Theatre) and a130-seat studio theatre, along with an education studio, attractive front of house spaces, dressing rooms, and dedicated workshop and costume facilities. “It will be the best theatre space in Aotearoa. There has never been a producing house theatre built on this scale in this country. By ‘producing house’, I mean we create our own plays as opposed to being a receiving house for productions. “Every little detail has been considered. For example, wardrobe/costume making will be close to the goods lift, in turn close to dressing rooms and the stage. When you have hundreds of costumes needing to be laundered and maintained, you need to make sure that the access between wardrobe and backstage areas and the stage is as smart as you can make it.” Ross says many are looking forward to having two theatre spaces, including the new purpose-built studio theatre that will be used to trial new work, host Scared Scriptless shows and as a stage for visiting productions and children’s theatre, as well as other Court Theatre productions better suited to the more intimate space. The new theatre complex will present a light and welcoming face to the public, with a glazing design that opens up the interior. Sustainability and accessibility have been guiding principles adhered to in the design and build. “We have an incredible responsibility to the future and that’s what this building is all about: a young theatre practitioner being able to create work in the best possible surroundings and for audiences to have the best theatre space to enjoy what the Court produces.” The Court Theatre attracts around 120,000 attendances a year. Putting all that foot traffic in the central city - sometime in the first half of 2025 - will be a real boost for the inner city .

T T to page 6 ckl.co.nz Providing expertise for projects across New Zealand INTEGRATED PLANNING, SURVEYING, ENGINEERING, AND ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS THAT WORK. The South Island’s newest culinary destination, Ayrburn, has opened its doors and promises an experience like no other, says Lauren Christie, Winton General Manager Queenstown. “Since it opened its gates to the public on December 9th 2023, Ayrburn has offered people an experience to remember with unique venues, where heritage meets innovation, and a range of dining experiences to suit every taste and occasion,” says Lauren. Located between Queenstown and Arrowtown, Ayrburn boasts a history dating back over 150 years and has undergone extensive restoration and revitalization, with the assistance of local architectural practice SA Studio, and local contractors Cook Brothers Construction and The Builders. Winton, which specialises in developing integrated and fully masterplanned neighbourhoods, has spearheaded the project. Across its 14-masterplanned communities, Winton has a portfolio of 26 projects expected to yield a combined total of circa 6,250 residential lots, dwellings, apartments, retirement village residences and commercial lots. “Remediation of the heritage farm buildings in Ayrburn started in October 2021 and the remediation process was delicate and slow, deconstructing each building and then recreating it with stronger hidden structures,” says Lauren. “Every building at Ayrburn has been meticulously restored, right down to preserving the natural sag of barn rooftops, honouring the original character in every decision.” Suppliers & Installers of: • Tray roofing • Corrugate / 5 Rib • True Oak • Rooflogic System • TPO & Torch on membrane roofing • Metrotile • Windsor Garage Doors • Premier Insulation • Scaolding P: 03 445 0553 • E: info@extremeroofing.co.nz MEMBRANE Photo: Vaughan Brookfield

| 5 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Winton- Ayrburn Ayrburn boasts a history dating back over 150 years and has undergone extensive restoration and revitalisation. SA Studio has left an indelible mark on the landscape of Central Otago with its work on the Ayrburn Domain Precinct project. Led by architect, Jessie Sutherland, the studio has helped to transform a collection of historic farm buildings into a vibrant destination, seamlessly blending heritage preservation with modern functionality. The Ayrburn Domain Precinct, unveiled in late 2023, features a range of dining experience including the Woolshed restaurant, the Cart Shed tasting room (a ectionately known as the ‘manure room’), the Cocktail venue Burr Bar and the Dairy, a boutique ice creamery. These establishments, along with a services annex housing essential facilities, now grace the beautifully landscaped grounds of the precinct. Central to the Precinct, which SA Studio is working on, is the restoration of the timber homestead named Billies, slated to become a high-end restaurant o ering a unique dining experience. Additionally SA Studio, is undertaking The Bakehouse, a multifunctional space encompassing a café, deli, pizzeria, and venue area, currently under construction. These developments not only breathe new life into the historic structures but also honour their rich agricultural heritage, says Jessie. “The heritage of Central Otago means a lot to me, as I have fond memories of time in my granddad’s woolshed. So working on these agriculture buildings, which is one of Historic buildings transformed the original farming homesteads of the Wakatipu has been very special; they have a story to tell and to be able to treat them with care and help make them into buildings the public can enjoy has been hugely rewarding.” SA Studio approached the renovation with meticulous care, collaborating closely with heritage consultants to ensure the integrity of the structures while seamlessly integrating modern amenities. Jessie says the project's success lies in SA Studio’s holistic approach, which prioritises collaboration with clients, consultants, contractors, and interior designers. SA Studio Ltd was founded in 2018 and is based in Cromwell, Central Otago. The practice has completed projects in residential, hospitality, and small-scale commercial and adaptive heritage architecture. Jessie says the Ayrburn Domain Precinct is a celebration of Central Otago's rich heritage. With attention to detail and unwavering dedication to excellence, she hopes that SA Studio has helped to set a new standard for adaptive reuse projects, leaving an enduring legacy for generations to come. “SA Studio along with the entire team – the client, interior designers, builders, contractors, and consultants- has transformed a vision into reality, creating a destination that pays homage to the past while embracing the future.” Jessie Sutherland NZRAB Registered Architect B.Arch (1st Class Hons) Victoria University, Wellington NZIA Member P. 021 108 2764 E. jessie@sastudio.co.nz W. www.sastudio.co.nz Photo: Vaughan Brookfield

It embodies our commitment to celebrating the stories of the past, by giving them a new future. It’s not just a destination; it’s an invitation to experience the best of New Zealand’s food, wine, and hospitality, in a place chosen 160 years ago for being one of the country’s most naturally stunning locations.” At the heart of Ayrburn is a commitment to excellence and innovation, says Lauren. “Led by Executive Chef Richard Highnam and Master of Wine Sophie Parker-Thompson, Ayrburn’s culinary team showcases the best of New Zealand’s food and wine, with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and artisanal craftsmanship,” she says. “Sophie worked alongside winemaker, Jody Pagey, to bring their expertise to Ayrburn’s award-winning wine range, served exclusively on the premises.” “Everyone has put so much passion into it and it’s nice to have a heritage project that has so much history be open to the public for the first time,” says Lauren. “As Ayrburn continues to evolve and expand its legacy as a pioneering agricultural estate and culinary destination is poised to grow even stronger. With a commitment to celebrating the stories of the past while embracing the opportunities of the future, Ayrburn invites guests to savour the essence of its natural beauty and proud history, one unforgettable experience at a time.” “An incredible amount of time has gone into making sure Ayrburn will be a place for great times.”

Situated in the heart of the Mackenzie region, The Cairns Alpine Resort has forged a reputation as a premium option in the area for unique accommodation and retreats. Owned and operated by the Simpson family, whose roots run deep in the local farming community, The Cairns offers a unique blend of heritage accommodation, breath-taking scenery, and an array of activities tailored to cater to retreats and group getaways. Andrew Simpson, one of the owners of The Cairns along with wife Karen and three children Ben, Amanda and Sam, invites visitors to “kick back and relax” amidst the tranquil beauty of the resort. “Whether guests choose to stay in the restored farm buildings or opt for the modern alpine lodges, they are promised an experience like no other,” he says. The Simpson family’s legacy in the region dates back generations since Popa Jack answered an ad for a shepherd at Mt Cook Station in 1928. Today the family owns the iconic Balmoral Station and Mt John Station, which have led to the development of a number of business ventures including short-term rental accommodations, golf course operations, and property subdivisions. Additionally, family members oversee specialised experiences such as alpine horse trekking and stargazing tours through their respective companies, adding to the diverse offerings at The Cairns. Andrew explains that the name ‘Cairns’, derived from the Gaelic term meaning ‘showing the way’, serves as a testament to the resort’s role in guiding visitors towards the splendour of the high country. Located just a stone’s throw away from Lake Tekapo and the township, The Cairns offers a secluded sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of city life, he says. The resort boasts an impressive range of amenities from the newly constructed Bunker House, designed for high-end accommodation, to huts, lodges and a homestead. All up The Cairns can cater to around 50 guests at a time, says Andrew. The resort’s versatility is highlighted by its ability to cater to a wide range of events and group sizes. Andrew says gatherings find a refreshing change of scenery amidst the crisp mountain air and rugged landscape. The Cairns offers a departure from traditional conference venues, providing ample space and facilities for both work and leisure activities. For corporate clients, The Cairns offers tailored packages that include accommodation options for small or large groups. Daughter in law Sarah runs Mackenzie Alpine Horse Trekking. Amanda and her partner Steve operate Go Tekapo, which offers a range of tourist activities including stargazing, fishing, farm tours, 4wd tours, hiking, biking and hunting. Most of the activities are operated on the family stations. “Whether it’s a brainstorming session in the wilderness or a leisurely round of golf on the resort’s scenic course, The Cairns ensures that every aspect of the retreat is meticulously planned and executed,” says Andrew. The resort’s 9-hole golf course, with its stunning panoramic views of mountains and lake, provides a unique backdrop for networking and team bonding. Meanwhile, horse trekking expeditions offer a chance to explore the rugged terrain and immerse oneself in the natural beauty of the region. Andrew says The Cairns is ever-evolving as the entrepreneurial Simpson family continues to develop options for people to enjoy their land. “The Cairns has been operating for many years now and we get a lot of repeat clients. People just love it here.”

10 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Tourism Holdings Ltd T T Richard Loader Awards recognition of a job well done. Tourism Holdings was named Company of the Year Finalist in the 2023 Deloitte Top 200. “It’s about teams feeling validation and that sense of success. I think that is the greatest reward for being recognised in these awards, either as a finalist, or as category winner.“ T T to page 12 Listed on both the NZX and ASX, Tourism Holdings Limited (THL) was named Company of the Year Finalist in the 2023 Deloitte Top 200, with its CEO Grant Webster winning the Chief Executive of the Year category. The Deloitte Top 200 Awards are held annually to recognise and celebrate outstanding individual and management team performances among New Zealand’s largest companies and trading organisations. Now in its 35th year, the Deloitte Top 200 Awards are well established as the pre-eminent platform for showcasing the best of New Zealand business. The Company of the Year award recognises the best organisational performance from the previous year. Judging criteria includes the latest financial measures, as well as non-financial and other qualitative measures of organisational performance, such as corporate reputation, approach to environmental management and others. The Chief Executive of the Year award recognises the best executive performance from the previous year. Judging criteria includes the performance of the winner’s organisation and the extent to which they have contributed to that performance and the current strategy. Also important is the regard in which the winner is held by peers. Acknowledging THLl’s success at the awards, Grant says what he particularly likes about the Deloitte Top 200 awards is that the candidate selection is through a process of external research, rather than corporate entry. He says that a number of years ago thl won a Deloiite’s Growth Strategy award, and he realised just how much the external recognition meant to the THL teams working in all different roles. “The real value that awards like Deloittes Top 200 provides is the external validation and confirmation of what we’re doing as an organisation, and how that helps people who are working really hard to say, actually we are doing a good job — we’re standing above our peer group in these different ways. It’s about teams feeling validation and that sense of success. I think that is the greatest reward for being recognised in these awards, either as a Finalist, or as category winner. We can say internally, hey you are doing a great job, but for someone external and independent to say it, that make a big difference.” Grant is somewhat coy on his own success at the awards, preferring the attention and praise be directed to the global thl teams, but says achieving CEO of the Year was huge recognition for him personally. “I would never at any stage during my youth or professional career have thought that I would be seen in a group the calibre of this year’s Finalists, or the previous winners. It was extremely humbling for me, and I think I have a little bit of the imposter syndrome. By the same token I know I work hard and try to do the right thing by people. So, if that is what has come through during the judging, then that is great. Not many leaders get the opportunity to have the support of the Board and different Chairs, to be in a role like this in a publicly listed place for fifteen years, and have the teams develop and continue to grow; to have that mandate to grow and do things differently. We haven’t got everything right, obviously, but it has been a genuine privilege. It has given the business and me an opportunity to continue to grow and develop. Rather than a new CEO every three to five years and jig to the left or the right, we have been able to build a team that is really long standing that does a good job.” THL was founded in the early 1980s as a South Island company called The Helicopter Line. After listing on the NZX in 1986 it progressively evolved into a broad based tourism company within New Zealand, then became a specialist in the motorhome side and expanding into Australia. Today, THL is the global leader in commercial motorhome rentals operating in New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, United States and Canada, with franchises in South Africa and Japan, buying, renting and selling RVs globally, all of which has been under Grant’s leadership. Not many businesses or leaders can lay claim to such success, particularly when Covid was an intervening factor. “When you’re a business that is ninety percent reliant upon international tourism and the borders close it’s pretty serious, and we were in the dark depths with any tourism company. “The thing that we did quite quickly was to challenge ourselves in what we were really good at and what we could do differently with our assets. We looked at our skill base and how we could apply that in this new world. The life blood of your business. 0800 70 10 10 sales@aktron.co.nz

FoodManufacturing: red meat, hygienic design, FMCG & dairy sectors. Utilities: power infrastructure, data centre construction, refrigeration, & energy services. Public Sector: educational property development, PMO establishment & training. During the unprecedented business upheavals and disruptions of the 2020 COVID crisis, Geoffrey Stewart and Iain Ferguson responded by forming a new project management business, Mahere Limited. After careers dedicated to successfully managing a diverse range of projects inNewZealand, South Asia, the Middle East and the UK, they chose a brand that reflected their approach to project success. “We frequently observe projects finishing badly after starting badly, due to a lack of investment in pre-engineering, budgeting or scoping,” says Geoffrey. “Mahere, [‘ma-heri’], in Te reo Māori means a plan or strategy; to make preparations or arrangements in advance, and that’s the essence of what we provide as a project management service.” Iain and Geoffrey bring complementary skills to their clients as project management professionals. Geoffrey is a process engineer by qualification with extensive experience in the food industry and manufacturing, whilst Iain’s experience comes from architectural services to healthcare, hospitality, and public sector building construction management. These skills enable Mahere to manage whole projects from building construction through to plant commissioning. Based in Dunedin, Mahere Limited delivers a range of private-sector commercial projects focusing on the food industry and throughout the Otago/Southland and Canterbury regions and further afield as opportunities arise. In 2023, Geoffrey managed a refrigeration upgrade in Southland for Alliance Group Ltd, and an end-of-line packing machinery project in East Otago. Iain completed the upgrade of Silver Fern Farms’ Pareora stockyards, the demolition of brick and asbestos-contaminated buildings, and currently managing the redevelopment of a prominent heritage building site in Dunedin. These projects all involved tender preparation and management, Engineer to Contract services safety and communications management, budget and schedule adherence, with Geoffrey and Iain taking the roles of client-side project managers, reporting on timelines, costs and risks for the client. We did really cheap rentals to get people moving around the country and try to reignite the tourism industry. That campaign sold out within four hours for a four month promotion. All of that came down to the team reflecting on what we were good at, changing what we were doing and being really fast and agile. It was great — everyone in the company did really well.” There was also the merger with Apollo, THL’s closest competitor and an Australian listed entity, with 50% of the shareholding owned by the founding family. “We saw an awesome opportunity from a synergy perspective. It took a year to get through the commerce commission both in New Zealand and Australia. We’ve been together for just over a year now and it’s going extremely well. That has been another key part of the strategic development of the company.” Reflecting upon THL’s recovery, Grant says credit must be given to the natural forces of tourism reopening, but says the THL team’s change adaptability must also be recognised. “Whilst we are corporate and global we’re also trying to stay a little more entrepreneurial so that we’re agile and adaptable. Things like the merger with Apollo, changing some of the ways we did our manufacturing and tidying up some parts of the business, all came from challenging the business, challenging the underlying problem statements and being change tolerant.” Excited about the future of global tourism, Grant says THL’s outlook into the next twelve months is very positive from an RV rentals perspective. “Inherently the industry is in a good place. It’s in good enough place that it is still looking to do things differently from a sustainability perspective, and challenging itself. “In New Zealand we now have a government that is acknowledging the opportunity for tourism growth, supporting that growth and seeing that the tourism industry can really help the country get through the tough economic times.” Feel at home, wherever you roam. www.vinz.co.nz We offer a full range of services for your business. • Entry Certification for imported cars • Vehicle Appraisals • WoF/CoF • Road User Charges • Registration & Relicensing New Zealand’s independent vehicle inspection specialists Appointed by the NZ Transpor t Agency VINZ - Vehicle Inspection New Zealand With twelve testing stations spread from Auckland through to Gore, the strength and success of VINZ (Vehicle Inspection New Zealand) lies within its people and the diverse range of end-to-end services that it can provide to its B2B and private customers. VINZ’s origins stem back to the early days of Japanese vehicle imports into New Zealand when a cooperative of used car dealers formed the business to facilitate vehicle entry. Originally called Vehicle Identi ication New Zealand, the business was founded at a time when all that a used import required was a 17-digit VIN number stamped and a ixed to the vehicle, followed by a WOF inspection. When the rules around vehicle entry changed in the early 2000s to a much more invasive inspection, the company name changed to Vehicle Inspection New Zealand, retaining the VINZ acronym. In 2013 the business was bought by JEVIC Company Limited, a member of the Optimus Group who are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard Market, and comprise of a number of companies that operate globally. Over the years the the services o ered by VINZ have evolved to include a comprehensive suite of services which are predominantly regulatory inspections carried out as a key service delivery partner to NZTA, Waka Kotahi. That includes WOF, COF, used light/heavy vehicle entry inspections, along with some ancillary inspection products. “The larger part of our o ering is b2b, working directly with leet operators and commercial customers like THL,” says VINZ Operations Manager Grady Stevens. “Retail, including private WOFs, COFs and a degree of entry compliance for private customers is a much smaller part of our o ering. Our point of di erence really is being part of the Optimus Group’s overall supply chain and a very high level of customer service. While the B2B o ering certainly includes used entry inspections and ongoing regulatory WOF, COF inspections, the fact that we are part of the Optimus Group means the customer can use the Groups services chain from anywhere in the world, particularly from Japan. If a business was to purchase a used vehicle out of Japan, the Optimus Group can facilitate the purchase, the export and shipping from Japan, and entry compliance provided by VINZ once the vehicle arrives.” VINZ relationship with tourism operator THL stems back at least 15 years and Grady says the service provided by VINZ is a great example of the holistic customer service delivered by the wider VINZ team, and the services o ered through Optimus Group. “Once THL has purchased motorhomes from Europe, VINZ facilitates a complete end-to-end service including shipping, collection from the Port to our facility, processing for entry compliance, and add-on services such as plumbing and electrical re it, and then delivers of the motorhome ready to go out on hire.” Grady points out that while many customers will select VINZ because of the services it can o er, although part of Optimus Group, VINZ is a standalone company and clients can choose which of the services they wish to use. https://vinz.co.nz/vehicletesting-stations/
