At the Grand Business South Awards 2023, Lab Supply was honoured to win the Excellence in Retail Award. “It was a real buzz to be there with the Otago/Southland business community and have that opportunity to meet new people and hear about new companies,” says Katie Hogue, who co-owns Lab Supply with her partner Adam Spurway. “We really enjoyed taking our whole team and celebrating with them. The business community here is quite modest but there are so many organisations and individuals doing remarkable things.” As an independent importer and distributor of scientific equipment and consumables from the world’s leading brands, Lab Supply plays a key role in supporting and enabling researchers and scientists across New Zealand to take their work the extra mile. Founded in 2010 by Adam and his parents Frank and Sue Spurway, the company works behind the scenes with New Zealand’s science and research community to meet their laboratory supply needs. Katie joined the business in 2021 from a background in business operations, human resources and law. Together, she and Adam have now taken up the reins of this unique family business. Lab Supply offers an efficient nationwide service. Their head office and warehouse in Dunedin services the South Island market, while their Auckland office and warehouse covers the North Island. By providing high quality, reliable products and delivering on their customer promise to be responsive and proactive, Lab Supply has cemented their place as a valued contributor within New Zealand’s science research community. Lab Supply has 75 global suppliers and stocks an extensive range of world class scientific equipment and consumables to meet the needs of academic researchers and medical laboratories as well as food producers and pharmaceutical companies. “We’re behind New Zealand science: our focus is on connecting smart people with the right stuff to do amazing things. Heidolph is a leading manufacturer of laboratory equipment that meets the high standards required for international science research. “Most of our suppliers are in Europe, the US and Australia, so even though we’re based here in Dunedin, we’re quite global in terms of our daily interactions with supply companies around the world.” Efficient purchasing arrangements are offered via Lab Supply’s customer portal, facilitating prompt delivery of essential laboratory items, such as glassware, pipettes, filters and filter tips. When items need to be ordered in from overseas, Lab Supply is transparent with customers on anticipated delivery timelines. Lab Supply supports what they sell via inhouse servicing, calibration and repair for a wide range of laboratory equipment, including liquid handling instruments. Adam often represents Lab Supply at various science symposiums and events, both as an exhibitor and a sponsor, and Lab Supply directly supports New Zealand scientific research excellence. For example, Lab Supply sponsors the University of Canterbury’s annual biology conference and last year sponsored the overall PhD presentation prize, won by Averill Moser-Rust for her research entitled ‘Spiders and Software and Statistics, Oh My!’ Katie says Lab Supply is constantly adapting what it offers in line with evolving science research needs and changing technology. Sustainability is a key focus in 2024. “We’re exploring B Corp certification [demonstrating high social and environmental performance] and are seeking to provide our customers with ever more sustainable product lines and advice.”
