Greg’s three sons are increasingly taking up the reins as the next generation: Michael, GDC’s General Manager, oversees all the contracting operations; Lane, a qualified mechanic, manages the in-house workshop; and Blake leads DDC, overseeing operations and drilling projects. Greg’s wife Kaye is also on the team as administrator for the workshop. Through good times and hard times, GDC has served Mid Canterbury with flair and innovation. Leading by example, Greg has built a reputation for completing projects to a high standard and doing what’s right for people and the region. His ability to anticipate needs has driven diversification of the business portfolio leading to the establishment of Directional Drilling Co (DDC), Underground Utility Detection and the Ashburton Eco Park, providing environmentally responsible disposal of green waste and demolition material. Greg’s inventive mind paved the way to the development of patented mole plough technology, a one-of-a-kind innovation in New Zealand that provides a quicker, more cost-effective alternative to open trenching. He was inspired to design the new technology as a result of a fatal accident in his family when an above ground power cable was struck with an auger. The decision had been made not to put the cable in the ground as it was considered too expensive. “I knew there had to be a better solution. When I started designing my mole plough, a lot of people told me to stick to my day job and that I’d go broke trying to do it.” After much trial, error and expense, the new mole plough was ready to go. It has since played a lead role in the undergrounding of power supply in and around Ashburton and, by extension, has made life for everyone — including the travelling public — much safer. Another addition to the fleet last December was a new custom-built Hydrovac truck offering a superior level of control, safety and versatility. From sponsorship to support for local clubs and events, Greg prioritises giving back to the community. In emergencies, such as the 2021 floods, his decisive actions have also helped keep the community connected and safe.
