You get a call asking for a certain type of aggregate by a specif¬ic date and you say, ‘yes, no worries.’ Then you get on the phone and work out how you’re going to make it happen. “Our quarries are like a supermarket: to the best of our ability, we keep stockpiles full, you never know when a customer will want something, and it could be one small trailer, or twenty truck-and-trailer loads. It’s a delicate balance at times.” Southern Aggregates Ltd (SAL) was established as a 50/50 joint venture between Fulton Hogan and HW Richardson Group, when the two businesses recognised an opportunity to combine their resources and experiences into the Greenhills Quarry operation near Blu . Its onsite team at the quarry has vast quarrying and crushing experience between them which is invaluable in this niche industry. Predominantly producing roading aggregates of all standard sizes and catering for special, one-o requests to meet job speci ic needs plus the production of fertiliser dust. “For Greenhills, we use mobile crushing plants that are permanently based at the quarry, to produce roading aggregate for our stockpiles there. We also transport rock up to the static fertiliser dust plant for processing. In both cases the rock is drilled, blasted, and then processed.” Recycled asphalt is a new addition to the team’s skill set; old asphalt that has been recovered from roads or job sites is stockpiled at the quarry for Fulton Hogan. “When required we crush this down to the required size so that it can be reintroduced into their asphalt plant production of new asphalt.” Sub-contractors play a major role in keeping a quarry going. “We are fortunate to have a good selection, they understand our business and particularly the need for urgency to keep the quarry operational, this can vary from ixing something that is broken to making suggestions about how the machinery can be improved. They all have the knowledge, the skills and are prepared to come out to site in all weather conditions.” A Legacy of Excellence Kerry: 027 203 3479 | Peter: 027 208 4854 Email: southern.aggregates@hwr.co.nz Greenhills Quarry | Ph: 0272 033479 Southern Aggregates Ltd We operate a hard rock quarry at Greenhills, near Bluff producing a range of products from construction gravels to rail ballast.
