Business South August 2025

26 | Bascik Transport - Calder Stewart T T Bernadette Cooney Trucking company on the move Bascik Transport has grown from a small local operation into one of New Zealand’s leading freight providers REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Bascik Transport is advancing its operations with a bold expansion strategy that sees a brand-new depot underway in Blenheim, a recently completed facility in Timaru, and the strategic acquisition of Jets Transport to bolster North Island operations, and seamlessly connect its logistics services nationwide. Following on from the opening of a new, purpose-built facility in Boxman Place, Nelson last year, Bascik Transport has engaged Calder Stewart to build another new depot at Aerodrome Road, Blenheim, which is scheduled for completion this August. The 8300sqm site will feature a 1600sqm building with 1500sqm canopy, making it four to five times the size of the company’s current Gouland Rd facility at Spring Creek. “Blenheim is pivotal for the future,” says general manager Owain Davies. “With ongoing ferry delays at Picton, we see Blenheim as a crucial hub to keep South Island freight moving. This new site means we can handle more volume, respond faster, and better serve Marlborough businesses.” The new Blenheim depot at Aerodrome Rd brings the Bascik team closer to town. “It provides a straight run into town, whereas the Spring Creek location was more rural and further away,” says Owain. “The new facility will be managed by current Spring Creek manager, Paul Stanton, who brings extensive knowledge of the Marlborough region. I’m really excited for the Blenheim team to enjoy the spoils of a new, purpose-built facility and continue its commitment to Marlborough businesses.” The Blenheim project follows a string of investments across the South Island. In June 2024, Bascik opened its 7000sqm Nelson facility at Boxman Place, adding to its flagship Christchurch freight hub, which spans a massive 44,000sqm with extensive canopies. In Dunedin, the company operates a 2000sqm building with a 1600sqm canopy, while Timaru recently welcomed a purpose‑built 1600sqm building, strengthening Bascik Transport’s presence in the south, which includes Invercargill and Cromwell. From July this year, Bascik Transport completed the acquisition of Jets Transport, a trusted, family‑run business with 73 years of service. Acquiring Jets adds approximately 40 trucks to the Bascik network, plus depots in Wellington and Palmerston North, giving Bascik Transport immediate coverage across the lower North Island, from New Plymouth to Napier and Hastings. “We’re now delivering overnight from Christchurch to Wellington and Palmerston North, while also strengthening connections from Auckland down,” says Owain. The Jets Transport fleet is currently being rebranded to Bascik Transport, with new depots planned for New Plymouth and Tauranga. A small Whangārei depot also came online this year, further expanding the company’s nationwide footprint. “Our goal is a full national network of our own Bascik red truck fleet handling freight door to door without relying on third‑party, final-mile providers.” Bascik Transport is Toitū Carbon Reduce certified, meaning it actively measures and manages its greenhouse gas emissions. Partnerships with KiwiRail help shift large freight volumes on to rail, while investments in bulk transport methods further reduce the number of smaller, less efficient trips. “We also have a full food safety programme implemented throughout our network,” says Owain. “The company continues to invest in technology upgrades, operating web‑based systems with live tracking and automated reporting giving customers real‑time visibility over their freight.” Founded in Christchurch in 1970 by Mervin and Pauline Bascik, the business has grown from a small local operation into one of New Zealand’s leading freight providers. Under the leadership of managing director Tony Bascik since 2000, the company has steadily expanded into a nationwide network, driven by a focus on service, efficiency, and innovation.
